See AllI'll still never accept Blade Runner 2049 flopping at the box office.
I think a big part of the problem was that it was a sequel to what essentially a 40+ y/o cult classic. I absolutely loved it but then the original is one of my all time favorites. My wife on the other hand fell asleep during both movies. I think that's the rub here, in order to appreciate BR 2049 you need to have an intimate appreciation of the first movie AND you really need to want there to be this continuation of the story.
I have a lot of friends who are in to anime. They keep telling me I'm the kind of person who should like anime but no matter how many different kinds of anime they show me I always find it to be dull and borderline nonsensical. I'm actually kind of sorry about that and I'm truly happy for those that do enjoy the genre but it doesn't appear that will ever be me.
Such it is w/ BR 2049. I think it's time to stop wondering why it wasn't a "commercial success" and just be glad that a cult classic, which by definition is a niche audience, got treated to a full blown big budget production such as this where all the aspects were top notch. I immediately snapped up a copy on 4K DVD so I can enjoy it into the future and I'm eagerly anticipating the Blade Runner 2099 series!
