The 2011 horror, The Cabin In The Woods, was generally met with a very positive reaction upon its release. The movie does what people expected, in that it provides scares, it has some characters that fall into the classic horror tropes and overall, it is a good time. However, the film also does plenty of unexpected things with a fun plot twist that most don't see coming.

The story is well put together and the pacing of the film really flows nicely throughout. Plus, the characters themselves, while flawed for being a little stereotypical, are all very engaging. There's a lot to like about (most of) them, and that really is how the film ends up being so easy to connect with. But which character in The Cabin In The Woods is everyone begging to survive, and which do people hope will meet a bitter end?

Steve Hadley

Steve Hadley

Outside of the monsters and creatures who cause all of the killings, Steve Hadley is the least likable character in The Cabin In The Woods. He's arguably even worse than the creatures, simply because he knows exactly what he is doing by unleashing them for the ritual.

Steve is one of the men in charge of the entire situation and he seems to find the entire thing hilarious. He treats others such as Mordecai poorly, happy enough to make jokes and laugh. His only concern about the entire situation is the fact that a Merman doesn't appear, which showcases how his thought process works.

Gary Sitterson

Whiteboard of monsters

Gary Sitterson is one of the technicians who work in the control lab throughout the movie, pulling the strings for everything that happens. He may only be doing his job, but the manner in which he behaves and the things he puts the victims through is despicable.

Happy enough to take bets on things, Gary clearly doesn't care about what is happening until the monsters and creatures are unleashed in their world as well. He is ever so slightly more likable than his partner in crime Steve, simply because he's less arrogant, but that doesn't change the fact he's very unlikeable.

Wendy Lin

Wendy Lin

Wendy Lin, much like Gary and Steve is one of the key people behind the scenes of the entire ritual. Wendy is one of the technicians who works in the lab, and she is the person who actually alters the chemicals for the five sacrifices in order for things to run smoothly.

While she shows some moments of finding the entire situation uncomfortable when talking with the security, she quickly changes her mind and bets herself. It proves that Wendy finds the whole thing to be a spectacle as much as the others, making her very unlikeable.

Mordecai

Mordecai Cabin In The Woods

Mordecai is certainly one of the creepier characters that appears within the movie. Appearing at the gas station early on in the movie, his character sets the tone for what is to come with his strange mannerisms, spitting, and general eerie behavior.

He is actually part of the staff for The Facility, and is simply playing a role, therefore he is an unlikeable character, if he wasn't already. However, he is slightly better than the technicians, simply because he does actually warn the group to not visit the cabin, and even though that's a double bluff, he technically does try to help.

Jules Louden

Jules Cabin In The Woods

Jules Louden is one of the main characters that is trapped at the cabin and is part of the ritual. She's the first character killed and someone who most audience likely aren't too sad about. Jules falls into the classic stereotype of being pretty, and up for anything.

It's a character trope that is often used within horror movies and here it is Jules that takes the role. She is more interested in getting drunk and fooling around than she is spending time with her friends. She makes out that Dana is boring at different points, and just doesn't come across as the nicest person.

The Director

The Director

The Director is a strange character because she is both unlikeable and likable at the exact same time. Because she only appears late in the movie, her true personality isn't really showcased as much as the others, but she is ultimately the person in charge of the torture that is taking place.

While most people likely think she is bluffing about The Ancient Ones rising and destroying the world, the fact is she is not. Therefore she is actually acting out of necessity, which does make her a little more respectable and likable.

Curt Vaughan

Curt-From-Cabin-Woods

Chris Hemsworth plays this role perfectly throughout his time in The Cabin In The Woods. His character of Curt Vaughan is one that has plenty of layers. He is a very smart person and while he is the typical jock style horror character, he shows plenty of heart.

Curt is all about having a good time, but when problems begin he doesn't back away and fights back. He isn't scared of the situation and even takes a major risk on his motorbike in a desperate bid to try and save his friends, showcasing his true personality.

Holden McCrea

Holden

It's a shame that Holden McCrea isn't able to survive a little longer when things start going south in The Cabin In The Woods because he has great intelligence. Holden's brains are clearly his strong point, but he is also very kind and has plenty of personality.

He showcases how likable he is as a person when he discovers the see-through mirror. He could easily have said nothing and just watched Dana, but he acts like a gentleman and reveals all, even going as far as to swap rooms with her, showcasing his kindness.

Dana Polk

Dana Polk

Right from the start of the movie when Dana is hoping to take books to study during their weekend at the cabin, it is clear she is going to be a very likable character. That early hint becomes clear as she certainly is one of the most likable people in the film and she really is the character everyone is wishing will survive.

Dana is put through a lot in the movie but she proves herself to be a survivor and someone who will never give up. Dana is a true underdog and that instantly makes her someone audiences likes. She tries her best to help everyone else and wants to just get along with people, not having the negative qualities that some of her friends have.

Marty Mikalski

Fran Kranz

Marty Kikalski starts out the movie being portrayed as a typical stoner who rambles on about philosophy and the meaning of life, simply because he's high. However, the fact he's high ends up saving Marty and makes him the only character who can actually see clearly during the ritual.

He's someone who questions everything and is very intelligent, and the fact he makes it to the end does provide some happiness in this one. He tries his best to help others and certainly comes across as a very likable character because of that.
