Though everyone, to some degree or another, wants to have balance in their lives, Libra has turned this desire into an art form. Libras also have a well-deserved reputation for wanting peace and serenity and for being more than a little cerebral.
In the world of film, there is perhaps no genre known for being cerebral as the science fiction film, so there is no shortage of such films that Libras will enjoy, as well as a few that they could do without.
Love: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
This is the film where it all began, with a story about a young man named Luke Skywalker who finds himself drawn into a galaxy-wide conflict. It’s a moving story, of course, and it fits perfectly into the model of the epic hero quest.
It is also all about balance, about attempting to restore a measure of equilibrium to a galaxy that has been turned very thoroughly to the darkness. Libras will appreciate this emphasis on balance, as well as the neatness of the film’s narrative.
Hate: District 9 (2009)
Perhaps more than any other film genre, the science fiction film has the ability to both ask uncomfortable questions about our world and to explore the realm of possibility.
This film does so by addressing the issue of apartheid and racism, though in this case racial animus is directed toward a spaceship full of aliens that land in South Africa. As stimulating as the film is, however, the fundamental injustices at its heart will be hard for Libras to stomach.
Love: Jurassic Park (1993)
This film from the 1990s has definitely become a classic of the science fiction genre. Its narrative of a park filled with dinosaurs that begin to run amuck is one that has continued to have a lot of symbolic purchase even so many years after its initial release.
Despite the numerous deaths that occur in the park itself, the film is fundamentally optimistic, and it also manages to ask questions about the nature of man’s relationship to the natural world and how humanity should use its own powers over it. Libras will particularly appreciate the character of Ian Malcolm and his cerebral approach to the park and its residents.
Hate: Minority Report (2002)
Though Steven Spielberg is known for frequently producing films that take a rather sentimental look at the world (both past and present) this film is a bit bleak, given that it depicts a world where human freedom is curtailed due to a technology that allows the government to preemptively arrest people for crimes they are going to commit.
There is, then, a lot of injustice peppered throughout the film, and Libras will find it hard to accept the way that personal freedom is so easily given up.
Love: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
This film received quite a lot of praise when it was first released, and rightly so. It depicts a post-apocalyptic world that is in some ways uncomfortably close to our own, holding up a mirror in which we can view a twisted reflection of ourselves. It also features some truly exemplary performances by both Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
Though It would have been easy for the film to go a darker route and give us an unhappy ending, in fact, it ends on a surprisingly upbeat note, a reminder of the hope that Libra will find appealing.
Hate: Annihilation (2018)
This is one of those films that has proven to be somewhat divisive, for while a lot of critics enjoyed its visual style and the unsettling nature of the story, they also thought its narrative was a bit confused. There’s some merit to both sides of the argument, but it is unlikely that Libra will have much patience with this film.
Aside from the problems with the story, it’s also a fairly violent film, with one particular sequence involving a mutated bear that is likely to haunt more than a few nightmares for years to come.
Love: Interstellar (2014)
Christopher Nolan has developed a reputation for being a director with a unique style, someone who knows how to make a film that is both thought-provoking and beautiful to behold. That is certainly the case with this film, which is one of the most well-crafted and beautiful space films to have been produced in the last twenty years.
Libras will appreciate the cerebral approach to the issue of humanity’s struggle to survive on an increasingly inhospitable planet Earth, as well as its (mostly happy) ending.
Hate: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Stanley Kubrick is one of those directors that has become respected as a man of vision. One can see that in this film, which manages to combine the genres of the science fiction film and the epic. It is, in many ways, a triumph of filmmaking, pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
While Libra might enjoy some aspects of this film, they will probably find its philosophical musings a bit much to handle, as they will exacerbate the Libra tendency to overthink and overanalyze.
Love: Wall*E (2008)
The titular robot of this film is, without a doubt, one of the most endearing and cute of all of the many creations of Pixar. What’s not to love about the little robot that manages to bring humanity back from the brink of self-indulgent oblivion?
Libra will especially appreciate the way that this film criticizes humanity’s tendency to indulge in conformity at the expense of individuality, as well as its barbed criticism of corporate dominance.
Hate: Inception (2010)
Unlike the other Christopher Nolan film on this list, this one is a bit of a challenge narratively. Indeed, part of the point of the film’s rather convoluted narrative is to make us question the ways that we make sense of the world.
Though Libras like a cerebral challenge, this film will no doubt cause them to overthink everything that they’ve ever done or thought, leading more to discomfort and distress rather than viewing pleasure.
