Fans are finding themselves charmed once again by a resurfaced ment for the very beginning of Zelda's timeline, Skyward Sword incorporates several new mechanics, like motion-controlled sword fighting and flying, sacred creatures called Loftwings. Although it's one of the more divisive entries in the franchise, it had at least one fan: actor Robin Williams.

As shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Video Game History, Robin Williams appeared in a 2011 print ad for Skyward Sword alongside his daughter Zelda, named for the titular princess. Williams can be seen using a Wii Remote and Nunchuk to assume a pose as if drawing a bow, while the caption reads, "Fans since day one."

The ad references Williams' highly publicized enjoyment of The Legend of Zelda series, which landed it many celebrity endorsements throughout its run. Particularly during the 3DS and Wii U eras, both Robin and Zelda Williams practically became spokespeople for the series, in an ad campaign fondly ed by fans of all three.

Even before naming his daughter after the title character, Williams had a long and well-documented fondness for The Legend of Zelda franchise. According to an article in Variety, it was on a 2009 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that Williams first discussed his appreciation for the series publicly. He claimed to have become hooked on one of the earliest Zelda games, playing it for hours on "one of the first Nintendo systems."

The Legend of Zelda series is known for many tropes that carry over and evolve between entries, but one has been an annoyance for way too long.

The partnership became official when Robin and Zelda Williams appeared in a pre-release ad for Ocarina of Time 3D, a launch title for the 3DS. They later returned to announce the release of Four Swords Anniversary Edition as a free piece of DSiWare to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary. When these ads proved popular, they reprised their roles in a series of ads for Skyward Sword, as in the poster seen above.

That was the final series of ads Robin Williams starred in for Nintendo, prior to his sudden ing in 2014. On X, many fans took the opportunity to his body of work, including these ads, which s like Breath of the Wild is commonly thought to resemble him.

Things like this tend to evoke emotional responses from players because they feel a connection to Williams due to their shared ion. As different as your life or mine might be from international superstar Robin Williams', if nothing else, we share an interest in the same video game.

More than that, though, these ads are also a family affair. Williams' love, both for his daughter and for his favorite video game series, is on full display here. That's what makes his sponsorship of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword so much more than a half-forgotten ad campaign.
