A recent interview with one of the developers for fan-made PC port of Ocarina of Time in progress that could be available by April of 2022.
Throughout the course of the franchise, Link has been paired with a variety of companions during his journeys across Hyrule and beyond. There are some reoccurring characters appearing in multiple installments such as the trusted steed Epona or even the titular Zelda herself as well as one-off fan-favorites like Midna from Twilight Princess or the King of Red Lions from Wind Waker. Then there are the partners that many Zelda fans, and as it turns out even some series developers, would prefer to never hear from again.
Navi was the first character hero Link was ever paired with throughout the franchise, however, this little ball of light was not particularly loved by those who created her. prolific Zelda developer Shigeru Miyamoto that revealed the Ocarina of Time designer found the fairy companion annoying. In the translation, Miyamoto calls Navi's help-giving mechanic "the biggest weak point of Ocarina of Time." The developer went on to say that he wanted to completely remove the system from the game, but that would have made Link's partner too unfriendly.
Miyamoto thinks of Navi as the type of companion that provides players with a refresher on the game's mechanics after a prolonged time away from it. According to the translation, it seemed the series creator wanted the fairy to perform a far more ambitious guiding system that offered hints for unique situations. Instead, the pieces of wisdom were relegated to simple and obvious tips as Miyamoto deemed creating such a complex help system would have taken as long as Ocarina of Time's development on its own.
Since 1998, there have been a good number of other Zelda companions competing with Navi for the crown of most annoying. Skyward Sword's Fi is arguably the top contender thanks to her constant intrusions throughout the game. Fi's constant interruptions were so disliked by the community that they had to be scaled back for the title's HD remake. There must be something truly special about Navi, however, to not only still annoy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time players after more than 20 years, but to also attract some disdain from the creator of the whole series.
