the 2017 version of Justice League is canon and they’ve also expressed no interest in the director’s sequel ideas for the film.

Prior to Justice League, though, Snyder had been fully enmeshed in comic book and graphic novel adaptations for years. The director shot to fame with his 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake before adapting the 300 graphic novel. Snyder went on to infamously adapt the seminal graphic novel Watchmen before embarking on his years-long tenure in the DCEU. Snyder has directed three films in the DC universe, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. He also served as a producer on Wonder WomanWonder Wonder Woman 1984, Suicide Squad, Aquaman, and two DCEU films, The Suicide Squad and The Flash.

Snyder may be done with the comic book adaptation world now, though. The director told Deadline that while there are still several comic book adaptations he would be willing to tackle, including Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns, he’s not sure if he wants to return to that world just yet. Snyder says he is happy focusing on other projects and the film he just finished and that there isn’t a “burning desire” for him to tackle another at this point in time.

Well, look, there are some comic books that I’m a fan, so there are comic books I love, you know? I’ve always wanted to do Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns and a couple others, but I don’t know. I’m just, I’m pretty happy with just kind of working, the movie that we just finished, but I don’t really have like a burning desire to make another comic book movie, I’ll say.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

Snyder already has a few projects lined up post-Justice League. First up is his foray back into the zombie genre with Army of the Dead. That film will follow a group of mercenaries as they attempt to rob a casino during a viral outbreak. He also serves as a producer on the prequel to that film and is working on an anime spinoff for Netflix. As for any other projects, Snyder seems to have carte blanche.

Snyder has expressed interest in adapting Ayn Rand’s novel The Fountainhead, but says that the current political climate has delayed work on that. The director has also floated an exploration of the King Arthur mythology as a potential follow-up project to Army of the Dead, but right now it all seems to be speculation. Whatever Zack Snyder chooses, he will have a legion of fans waiting eagerly to see what his Justice League follow-up will be, and now that he is free from the constraints of franchise filmmaking, it certainly seems like the possibilities are endless.
