The movie, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions, is a follow-up to the Yu-Gi-Oh! story. It closes many journeys that were left open when the manga and show ended. While it technically picks up after the manga ends, it serves as an ending for these parts of the franchise lore.
Every character that fans love has a chance to shine in this film and they each have at least one pivotal moment that is fun to watch, even if some are a bit darker than others.
Child Yami Bakura
The film showcases Bakura meeting with the spirit of the Millennium Ring for the first time - and it isn't pretty. While his father was trying to keep it as a treasure it rejected him and inhabited Bakura.
As Shadi was with the Ring while this was happening, he is killed by Yami Bakura, who is literally a child at this point. It's fascinating to see such an evil spirt as an actual child, but it quickly becomes a very dark moment for everyone that is involved.
Kaiba Summoning Obelisk
One of the most powerful moments in the film occurs when Kaiba is dueling with Diva. He is close to losing, but as this duel is happening where the Pharaoh was laid to rest, his connection to his Egyptian past is stronger than ever. As such, he's able to do something that should be impossible; he summons Obelisk the Tormentor.
This absolutely shocks Diva because Kaiba summons the creature through need and willpower alone. Shortly after this, Kaiba and Mokuba escape with all of the pieces of the puzzle, except one that Diva is able to snag.
Atem Coming Back One More Time
The Diva and Yugi duel is an incredible one. While it would have been nice to watch Yugi finish it on his own, his body gives out at the last moment, despite having all of the cards that he needs in order to win.
Just then, Atem returns to inhabit the Millennium Puzzle one last time. Without saying a word, he is able to finish off the duel for Yugi and defeat the combined forces of Diva and the Millennium Ring.
Tea Following Her Dreams
Tea manages to really break out on her own in this film. In the movie's second to last scene, she gets on a plane and leaves Japan in order to follow her dreams of becoming a dancer.
While it might not be related to dueling, this is a huge step for anyone to take. It shows just how brave of a person she is, leaving everything that she knows behind in order to pursue her dreams. Tristan, on the other hand...
Tristan Fixing Joey's Duel Disk?
Just like in the original series, Tristan really just doesn't do very much this entire movie. He's present for most of it, but that's really it.
Sure, he tries to fix Joey's duel disk, but beyond that, he's just sort of there with the rest of the crew, cheering Yugi on.
Yugi Defeating Kaiba
Without any help from Atem, Yugi is able to defeat Kaiba in a one-on-one duel during Dark Side of Dimensions. He uses an expanded Dark Magician deck, incorporating retrains of his other popular monsters as well.
While it's a close one, Yugi is able to defeat Kaiba right before the event is interrupted by Diva. This duel showcases how much Yugi has grown since the original series concluded.
Joey Pulling Himself Back Into The Real World
Joey is faced with an incredibly serious situation in this film - Diva traps him inside of his memories and starts to erase them - one by one. Joey is forced to face this on his own and is running away as the world disappears. Through his strong bond with his friends (and perhaps a little help from Atem, it is unclear), Joey manages to make it out of a situation that very few would be able to.
While fans didn't get to see him duel, it was great to watch him defy all odds and save himself from Diva's terrible actions. Speaking of Diva...
Diva Causing What He Seeked To Stop
It's pretty great watching Diva go down in this film - because if he literally just didn't do everything that he did, nothing bad would have happened. Before dying, Shadi gave Diva and the other children he watched over the power of the Plana, a dimension of their own where they could live in harmony with boundless power.
This power would cease to exist if Atem ever came back to the world. The actions of Diva, however, are what cause Atem to come back. Had he not been an aggressor, to begin with, Atem never would have needed to come back in order to defeat him. As such, it's satisfying watching Diva lose and knowing that his own actions are what lead to his undoing.
