Zigfried and his younger brother Leon, a pair of siblings determined to destroy Kaiba’s company, entered the tournament to strip Yugi of his title. To accomplish this goal, Zigfried created an illegal field spell that would guarantee Leon’s victory during his duel against Yugi, the Golden Castle of Stromberg.

This powerful spell card would not only prevent Yugi’s monsters from attacking Leon but would also send 10 cards from the King of Games’ deck to the graveyard each turn. Determined to win, the young Muto began drawing and utilizing the cards in his deck until only one was left. Due to this, the Castle’s cost could not be paid and it was destroyed. At the start of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, Seto Kaiba was considered the best duelist in the world. Thanks to his powerful and imposing Blue-Eyes White Dragons, there were few duelists capable of standing up to the young CEO. Fearing that someone would acquire the elusive fourth Blue-Eyes, Kaiba kidnapped Yugi’s grandpa and destroyed the fourth copy of the card in front of the future King of Games. Filled with anger, Yugi challenged Kaiba to a duel, to which Seto agreed happily. For most of the game, Kaiba maintained the lead, as his mighty dragons seemed to be unbeatable.

Yugi did not relent, reminding Kaiba that he would not give up as long as he had life points left. His fate on his cards was rewarded once the young Muto understood the strategy of his grandfather’s deck. Five special cards were shuffled into the deck: the pieces needed to awaken the unstoppable Exodia. Once Yugi collected all the pieces, he was granted an instant victory, proving to Kaiba that might is not everything. This is an iconic duel, considered by many fans as one of the best in the franchise.

Throughout the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series, fans witnessed how Jaden went from a carefree and enthusiastic young man to a serious duelist haunted by his past. He sent the student back to the past, so he could face the King of Games during his prime. Both duelists gave it their all, summoning various iconic monsters like Dark Magician Girl and Elemental Hero Neos.

Yugi managed to summon one of his imposing Egyptian Gods, Slyfer the Sky Dragon. 4 Yugi Vs. Marik (Strings)

Yugi's amazing strategies were able to defeat a God

When the Battle City tournament began, Marik used his loyal servants, the Rare Hunters, to try and stop Yugi from obtaining the God cards. The villain used to take control of his hunters’ bodies to duel against the pharaoh. Marik used this strategy when Yugi faced the mime Strings, a powerful duelist who was given the Slyfer the Sky Dragon card. The deck of this Rare Hunter was designed to be virtually invincible, including cards to defend both Slyfer and Strings’ Life Points. His Revival Jam monster would come back to the field whenever it was destroyed.

Combined with his Card of Safe Return, a spell that would allow him to draw cards whenever a monster was reborn, he could protect Slyfer while also increasing the deity’s attack. Yugi cleverly used this strategy against Strings, taking control of his Revival Jam and forcing Slyfer to destroy it over and over again. This caused the Rare Hunter to draw all of his cards, immediately losing the game. Not only did this duel grant Yugi ownership of the Egyptian God but it also showcased Yugi’s brilliant strategic mind.

3 Yugi Vs. Marik (Battle City Finals)

Not even the ultimate God card could stop Yugi

The Battle City tournament gave Yugi many chances to prove his superior skills as a duelist, but none were better than his final encounter with Marik. While Yugi had many powerful cards on his side, including two Egyptian Gods, Marik had the mighty Winged Dragon of Ra. This deity was considered the most powerful of the three, with immunity to effects, the ability to revive itself, and the ability to destroy the opponent’s monsters. Not allowing this beast to frighten him, Yugi created a strategy to definitively overcome Marik’s strategy.

Yugi tricked the villain into paying all his life points and giving them to Ra to boost his attack, ensuring that Marik would not be able to make a comeback. He then proceeded to banish all his monsters to destroy the Winged Dragon of Ra. In the process, he banished Obelisk and Slyfer, proving that he did not need divine intervention to win the duel. This strategy proved successful, leaving Marik with a single life point and no more plays to make.

2 Yugi Vs. Kaiba (Dark Side Of Dimensions)

Yugi proved himself as the true King of Games

Atem’s goodbye at the end of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters manga affected everyone who got to know the pharaoh. Kaiba, who was not present during the duel between Yugi and Atem, refused to accept the young Muto as the King of Games. He became obsessed with battling the pharaoh one last time, to prove that he was the superior duelist. Kaiba challenged Yugi to a duel, thinking that this would awaken Atem once more. The King of Games accepted, to prove to Kaiba that he was the true champion and to help his friend accept that the pharaoh was gone.

By combining his iconic Dark Magician strategy with his new Fruit Magician Girls, Yugi managed to overpower Kaiba’s most powerful cards. No matter what the CEO would attempt, Yugi was prepared to counter it. The King of Games proved his superiority during the last few turns of the duel. Yugi gave Kaiba his Monster Reborn card, one of the most powerful spells in the game. Once Kaiba activated it, Yugi used his Final Geas trap, which banished all monsters in both graveyards. The young Muto was always a step ahead of Kaiba, cementing himself as the true king.

1 Yugi Vs Atem

Yugi's final test was his hardest and most heartbreaking

With Yami Bakura defeated, Atem was ready to return to the afterlife and leave the mortal world. To help his friend find the eternal rest he was looking for, Yugi needed to defeat the pharaoh in a duel. Each with a unique deck, both duelists began the most intense battle of their lives. Atem’s deck contained a majority of the pair’s most iconic and powerful cards. Monsters like the Dark Magician, the Dark Magician Girl, and the three Egyptian Gods were among the cards the pharaoh commanded. Yugi decided to utilize his new Silent monsters, powerful creatures that get progressively stronger.

Atem obtained the lead early in the duel, being able to control his Egyptian Gods at the same time. Yugi, knowing that he could not defeat them in a direct fight, used various traps and spells to make the deities destroy themselves. With his most powerful monsters destroyed, Atem became desperate. By thinking ahead, Yugi predicted that Atem would try to revive one of his Gods, a play that the young man managed to stop. With a final iconic attack, Yugi defeated his friend, becoming the true King of Games and setting the pharaoh free.
