Warning: This article contains spoilers for XO, Kitty!Lara Jean’s sister Kitty, who decides to spend a year abroad attending school in Korea to be closer to her long-distance boyfriend, Dae. However, when Kitty arrives at her new school, KISS, she discovers that her plan has a wrench in it, as Dae is in a (fake) relationship with another girl, Yuri. Combined with learning about her mother and adjusting to a new school, Kitty has more to tackle in XO, Kitty than she originally thought.

Even though Dae and Kitty finally get to be together by the end of XO, Kitty, Kitty discovers that it’s not the happy ending she thought it would be. Matters only become more complicated when Kitty gets expelled from KISS for living in the boys’ dorms. Despite the fact that not everything works out perfectly for Kitty, XO, Kitty’s ending resolves many of the biggest mysteries in the Netflix series and even creates a few more.

Why Jina & Eve Stopped Being Friends

The Pair Lost Touch After A Series Of Misunderstandings

Although Dae is a huge reason Kitty wants to go to KISS, she also wants to attend the Korean school to learn more about her mother, Eve, who also went to KISS in the early 1990s. While at KISS, Kitty discovers that her mother and the school’s principal, Jina Lim, used to be best friends, but at some point, they had a falling out. Why Jina and Eve stopped being friends is a major mystery throughout XO, Kitty, especially since Jina refuses to acknowledge knowing Eve. However, at the end of the To All The Boys I Loved Before spinoff, Jina reveals to Kitty why she and Eve stopped talking.

After Kitty is expelled from KISS for rooming in the boys’ dorm all semester, Jina stops Kitty to talk to her before she leaves Korea. Jina then gives Kitty a letter that Eve had written to her after Eve had gone back to America, and Jina expresses regret that she never wrote her back. So, even though Kitty and Yuri had theorized different dramatic falling-outs between their mothers, the real truth about why Jina and Eve stopped being friends is simply because they fell out of touch with each other.

Why Kitty Leaves Dae The Necklace

The Gift Symbolizes How Important Dae Is To Kitty

xo kitty necklace

The necklace Kitty gave Dae, which originally belonged to her mother, plays a big role in their relationship throughout the Netflix series. When Kitty leaves KISS after being expelled, she doesn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Dae in person, but Q reveals to Dae that she left him the necklace, along with a note that says, “This is yours.” Although it’s never verbally revealed why Kitty left Dae her mother’s necklace, the reason behind this gesture lies in the necklace’s original meaning.

The necklaces were a symbol of Eve and Jina’s friendship even though their friendship ended, and this is ultimately the reason that Kitty decides to leave Eve’s necklace with Dae.

Eve’s necklace was originally one of two identical necklaces, with the other one belonging to Jina. The necklaces were a symbol of Eve and Jina’s friendship even though their friendship ended, and this is ultimately the reason that Kitty decides to leave Eve’s necklace with Dae. Even though they are no longer together, Kitty wants Dae to know that he is still an incredibly special person to her, which is why she decides to leave him the necklace as a parting gift.

The Real Reason Dae Cares So Much About School

Dae Has An Incredibly Competitive Scholarship

Dae is shown to place an extreme value on his grades and having the top scores at KISS, and at the end of XO, Kitty, it is finally revealed why Dae cares so deeply about his performance in school. When final scores are posted, Dae loses his top ranking to Florian, who cheated on the final exams out of fear of getting kicked out of KISS. When Q tries to console Dae about the grades, Dae tells Q that he needs the top spot because it’s a requirement of his KISS scholarship. Though it’s not said what happens to Dae, this is a huge revelation about Dae’s actions.

Why Kitty Leaves Yuri & Juliana

Kitty Confessing Her Feelings Wouldn't Have Achieved Anything

xo kitty 1

After Kitty and Dae break up in the airport, Kitty runs into Yuri. Deciding that running into each other in the airport must be fate, Kitty attempts to confess her true feelings to Yuri. However, before Kitty can get to the point, Juliana arrives, revealing the reason why Yuri is at the airport. When Yuri leaves to greet Juliana, Kitty decides to leave them be and board her flight back to the United States. Although it is never actually revealed why Kitty leaves Yuri and Juliana, Kitty has a good reason for doing so.

Though Yuri is perplexed that Kitty disappeared in the airport before she could introduce Kitty and Juliana, that is precisely the reason Kitty left. When Juliana arrives, Kitty realizes that confessing her feelings to Yuri would be a moot point. Additionally, Kitty feels that now that Juliana is back in Korea, there is no need for Kitty in Yuri’s life, especially since she is expelled from KISS and is returning to the United States. Therefore, Kitty abandons her plan to confess her affection to Yuri, instead allowing the couple to reunite in peace.

Why Yuri Asks Her Mom To Let Kitty Back Into KISS

Kitty Is Too Significant For Yuri To Let Go

Yuri talks on the phone in the airport in XO Kitty.

After Kitty leaves Yuri and Juliana in the airport, Yuri excuses herself from Juliana to make a phone call. Yuri immediately calls her mom and attempts to plead Kitty’s case, trying to convince Jina not to expel Kitty from KISS. The scene changes before viewers get to hear why Yuri thinks Kitty should be let back into KISS, but Yuri has more reasons for wanting Jina to let Kitty back in than there appears to be on the surface.

Kitty and Yuri have forged an unlikely friendship throughout XO, Kitty, with Yuri considering Kitty to be one of the few real friends she has. Even though Yuri was upset with Kitty for hiding the truth about Alex from her, she has come to forgive her and still considers her a close friend. The significance Kitty has in Yuri's life is shown by the fact that Yuri immediately looks for Kitty after her reunion with Juliana. This, combined with Yuri not believing what Kitty did was bad enough to warrant expulsion, is ultimately why Yuri pleads Kitty's case to Jina at the end of XO, Kitty.

Who Is Simon?!

The Mysterious Figure Still Hasn't Been Revealed

xo kitty 2

As Kitty sits on the plane, she reads the letter Jina gave her from her mom. Eve writes that her life has been changed by going to KISS, by Jina, and by a mystery character named Simon. Unfortunately, the mystery of who Simon is goes unresolved in XO, Kitty, as Eve doesn’t give any context as to who he is and what her relationship with him was like. Kitty theorizes that Simon might have been Eve’s first love, but whether that is true remains to be revealed - though it could be a significant plot point for XO, Kitty season 2.

Why Min Ho Confesses His Love To Kitty

His Timing Was All Too Convenient

Min Ho looks at Kitty on the plane in XO, Kitty season 1's ending

At the very end of XO, Kitty, Kitty discovers that Min Ho is actually on the same plane back to the United States as she is. Here, Kitty reveals to Min Ho that she and Dae are no longer together. After Kitty’s confession, Min Ho takes the opportunity to tell her a confession of his own: Min Ho has fallen in love with Kitty. Since the last episode of XO, Kitty ends directly after this ission, it is never revealed why Min Ho chooses to tell Kitty about his feelings or what the fallout is to this conversation.

There is a clear reason as to why Min Ho, someone who has consistently been portrayed as aloof, would tell Kitty he loves her. Q tells Kitty earlier in the episode that Min Ho is aware that she has been expelled from KISS and that he has a hard time showing his true feelings. This is ultimately the key to why Min Ho chooses to reveal his true feelings to Kitty on the plane. Min Ho assumes that they will never see each other again since Kitty won’t be returning to KISS, so he figures that there are no consequences for telling her the truth.

The Real Meaning Of XO, Kitty’s Ending

The Series Is About Being True To Oneself

xo kitty

Although XO, Kitty is a mostly lighthearted romp, the Netflix show’s ending really has a deeper meaning. XO, Kitty reveals the significance of finding one’s true self, even when not everything goes to plan. On the surface, Kitty’s year in Korea is a failure since she broke up with Dae and got expelled from KISS, but it was a huge success as Kitty grew as a person and learned about her mother. This theme applies to every featured character in XO, Kitty, but none more than Kitty. Despite the negative events in the spinoff's ending, XO, Kitty shows that sometimes, plans falling through can be the best thing to happen.

How The XO, Kitty Ending Sets Up Season 2

Kitty's Story Picks Up Right Where Season 2 Left Off

XO, Kitty season 2 arrived in early 2025, and was set up in several key ways by the ending of season 1. Firstly, the trailer for XO, Kitty season 2 confirms that Kitty is indeed returning to KISS, showing just how important Yuri's phonecall to her mom truly was. However, this time around, Kitty intends to focus on her studies, though finding out about her own mother is also on her agenda (which means the identity of the mysterious Simon is also going to be incredibly important for XO, Kitty season 2).

There were also plenty of shots of Kitty spending time with Min-Ho. Though they profess that they're not a couple (showing that Min-Ho's confession didn't lead to a relationship), Kitty its through a voiceover that things are complicated. However, in the same voiceover, she also explains that she's more interested in dating girls, and that she's not over Yuri. It seems that Min-Ho's confession, and Kitty's decision not to confess her own feelings to Yuri, at the end of XO, Kitty season 1 will directly play into the storyline of season 2.

How The XO, Kitty Ending Was Received

A Worthy Conclusion To The All The Boys Spinoff

Kitty and Yuri lay in bed looking at each other XO, Kitty

Netflix released every episode of XO, Kitty in a single batch. This means that there aren't many reviews focusing specifically on the 10th and final episode of season 1, "OTP". However, overall, the show was received incredibly well by fans and critics. Praise wasn't universal as far as reviews were concerned, but fans of the To All The Boys movies generally regarded it as a worthwhile addition to the franchise.

The teases about the mysterious Simon and Kitty holding back confessing her feelings to Yuri created a strong enough cliffhanger for XO, Kitty to continue.

As far as the ending of XO, Kitty season 1 is concerned, the fact that Netflix renewed the show for season 2 speaks volumes. Of all the streaming platforms, Netflix is notorious for canceling shows. Had the XO, Kitty season 1 ending been sub-par, or not a worthwhile enough finale to continue the story, it seems incredibly likely that season 2 simply wouldn't have arrived. In particular, the teases about the mysterious Simon and Kitty holding back confessing her feelings to Yuri created a strong enough cliffhanger for XO, Kitty to continue, with Netflix subscribers frequently voicing how eager they were for season 2 online.
