Almost a decade after its original release on the Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X is receiving an enhanced re-release on the Nintendo Switch in 2025. Released in 2015, Xenoblade Chronicles X was the second game to be released in the Xenoblade Chronicles series - however, despite being one of the series' earliest entries, XCX bears no direct connection to any of the other games, with its futuristic setting and open-world structure marking it as something more like a spinoff or side-game when compared to the three "main" entries.

As announced by Nintendo on X, the game will be receiving an enhanced port to the Nintendo Switch, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, which is set to release on March 20, 2025. Notably, this marks XCX as the last Xenoblade Chronicles game to make its way to the Switch, meaning that, after its release, the entire series will be playable on the console. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will also include a few new features, similar to the Definitive Edition of the original Xenoblade Chronicles.

The version of Xenoblade Chronicles X set for release in 2025 will be mostly similar to the 2015 original, with the most notable new features being graphical improvements and new story segments. While not much is currently known about the story additions, aside from a brief teaser at the end of the reveal trailer, it's likely that the new story will be similar to the Future Connected epilogue that was added to Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition on Switch.

Notably, however, March 2025 also marks the end of Nintendo's fiscal year, and as a result, is the latest month when Switch s can possibly expect the announcement of the company's next console. This could make Xenoblade Chronicles X one of the last major releases for the Switch, in addition to its status as one of the last major Wii U titles to receive a re-release on the console.

The announcement of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition comes as a welcome surprise for fans of the series, who may have assumed that the game would be indefinitely stuck on Wii U. On X and Reddit, fan response has been largely positive, with many players surprised by the sudden announcement and speculating over the short teaser shown at the end of the trailer, which seems to directly follow the last scene of the original game.

With the new announcement, fans are already hopeful about a possible sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles X, but something like that will likely have to wait until the release of Nintendo's next console.
