Warning: Spoilers ahead for Uncanny X-Men #14!
X-Men franchise's charming master thief, but Remy LeBeau shockingly just betrayed his fellow mutant heroes by knowingly endangering their lives, and the repercussions could end his and Rogue’s relationship as fans know it. Starting as a foe to the X-Men, Gambit has come a long way to becoming a staple member of the iconic superhero team but his latest move might have jeopardized everything.
In Uncanny X-Men #14, written by Gail Simone, with art by David Marquez, the dragon Sadurang tells Gambit the amulet he acquired, the Eye of Agamotto, comes with the morbid curse of overtaking its with madness and cannibalism. One would think Gambit would give up the amulet with the risk of trying to consume his own friends and family, but the X-Man surprisingly takes his chances and ultimately decides to keep his newfound power.
Gambit has always been a gambling man, but his questionable choice will undoubtedly put him at odds with his fellow X-Men, especially his wife, Rogue.
Gambit Makes The Biggest Bet Of His Life, Gambling With The Lives Of The X-Men...And Rogue
Uncanny X-Men #16; Written By Gail Simone; Art By David Marquez; Color By Matthew Wilson; Lettering By Clayton Cowles
First seen in Uncanny X-Men #1 by Gail Simone and David Marquez, Gambit stole the Left Eye of Power from the dragon Sadurang, and has received a magical boost, becoming equipped with abilities such as teleportation and green blasts of energy. However, the longer Gambit uses the amulet, the more he begins to crave human flesh and go mad. Though Gambit is a gambler at heart and infamous for taking big risks, this risk feels like a betrayal to his X-Men, and especially his wife, because he is putting them in harm's way for power.

Gambit and Rogue May Be In Love, But the X-Men Romance Has a Loophole Few Ever Notice
Gambit and Rogue are universally viewed by X-Men fans among Marvel's best romances, but one loophole in their marriage could set them up for divorce.
This choice will affect Rogue the most as she leads the Louisiana X-Men and is responsible for the new young recruits, and now, her husband is willingly bringing a dangerous curse into their home, with the high potential for him to turn on them. Gambit and Rogue are one of the best couples within the X-Men, but this betrayal could end them. It’s to be seen if Gambit has a plan to combat this curse, but it’s hard to believe he would chance personally hurting his friends for a magical amulet he doesn’t fully understand.
Will Gambit Beat The Odds Of His Cannibalistic Curse, Or Will The X-Men Be Forced To Fight To Take Him Down?
Marvel Sets Up Gambit Vs. The X-Men
While the choice to keep the amulet is a debatable one, and the amulet may already be affecting his mind, Gambit always knows the odds and potentially has a way of staving off the amulet’s afflictions. Remy LeBeau is known for his ability to kinetically charge objects, causing them to combust, but Gambit also has a slew of other powers, some may not be privy to, such as his telepathic resistance. In a previous Uncanny X-Men volume, Gambit was able to resist and block Psylocke’s mental probing, meaning his fortified mind could extend to being resistant to magical persuasion.
This sets up an interesting fight if the curse of the amulet comes to fruition, as the X-Men won’t want to hurt Gambit, but he will be imbued with incredibly dangerous power.
On the other hand, if Gambit can’t resist the side effects, the X-Men will be forced to fight him, and that sets the stakes even higher because not only is Gambit a powerful mutant as is, he would have magic and the insatiable hunger for human flesh driving him. This sets up an interesting fight if the curse of the amulet comes to fruition, as the X-Men won’t want to hurt Gambit, but he will be imbued with incredibly dangerous power. It begs the question of whether Gambit could take down Rogue and Wolverine, two of the X-Men’s strongest heroes.
Gambit’s Peak Power May Be Unlocked The Most Morbid Way Possible
Gambit Unintentionally Betrays The X-Men
This conundrum, brought about by Gambit possessing the eye of Agamotto, presents a unique situation where the X-Men will most likely face Gambit at close to his most powerful state as the Left Eye of Power boosts his already explosive abilities. The X-Men have similarly faced a powerfully augmented Gambit before when he became Apocalypse’s Horsemen of Death, however, the Eye of Agamotto is a completely different ball park as it is near sorcerer supreme level magic. The amulet may even unlock Gambit's omega-level potential, bying Mister Sinister’s alteration to his brain.

Gambit Is Done Holding Back, Unleashing His Full Power: "Ain't Nobody Coming Back from Dat"
Gambit is the X-Men’s secret powerhouse, and Marvel’s Ultimate Marvel Universe just showed how powerful Remy LeBeau would be if he didn’t hold back.
If Gambit turns on the X-Men due to his newfound lust for eating flesh, it would be both an intensely epic battle and tragic, as he has already betrayed them by risking their lives over the prospect of more power. His array of abilities brought on by the Left Eye of Power will certainly make him a surprising yet formidable foe to his fellow heroes. Gambit can still come clean to the X-Men, but his refusal to give up the amulet is ittedly deplorable, so much so that Rogue wouldn’t be completely wrong if she considered leaving him.
Uncanny X-Men #14 will be available on May 14, 2025, from Marvel Comics!
