Summary

  • X-Men fanart gives Cyclops, Wolverine, and Colossus a stylish new look with matching black and red costumes.
  • Art by thewarblazer takes a futuristic approach, highlighting the X-Men's mission as protectors of the next human evolution.
  • The art recalls Alex Ross' impressive redesign of the X-Men, with similar two-color looks.

X-Men heroes most colorful and variable costumes in Marvel lore, with Xavier dressing his students in order to establish a link between homo superior and superheroism in the public imagination. At other times, the X-Men have been forced to go more low-key, able to blend into a world that hates and fears them. However, this new redesign allows the mutant heroes to take their rightful place as the protectors of tomorrow.

In amazing art by thewarblazer, Cyclops and Wolverine stand side by side wearing black and red costumes. While Logan (drawn at his comic-accurate height) has confined his design to his jacket, complemented by a plaid shirt and black tros, Cyclops goes for a futuristic tabard, with the red highlights perfectly matching the energy of his optic blasts.

Following fan reaction to the initial art, thewarblazer also posted a solo design sheet for Cyclops, as well as adding the steel-skinned Colossus to the original art (below.) Colossus gets an even more ambitious red and black costume, with cutouts referencing his classic costume in X-Men comics. Each character's costume is detailed with the hero team's iconic 'X' logo.

Wolverine, Colossus and Cyclops Get Fashionable Redesigns in New Fanart

The X-Men Franchise Has Gone Back and Forth on Matching Costumes

X-Men has varied its costumes over the years, with some eras like Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's New X-Men giving the team matching costumes, and others (like the recent Krakoan Era) essentially giving everyone their own look, vaguely bound together by an 'X' belt buckle. thewarblazer's art leans into the former, giving the X-Men a futuristic, somewhat arch look, taking them beyond 'superhero' aesthetic and into their unique mission as protectors of the next evolution of the human race.

This X-Men Fanart Is Reminiscent of Alex Ross' Unused X-Men Redesigns

The Iconic Artist's Costumes Never Truly Appeared in the Comics

This vision of monochrome X-Men with plenty of black brings to mind Alex Ross' designs for the team, with Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and more getting incredibly stylish costumes. Sadly - while these looks were included in Marvel's Millennial Visions: X-Men - they only appeared as illustrations alongside a text story, and they've yet to appear in a traditional comic story despite being popular among fans.

Indeed, the enduring popularity of Ross' redesigns and fan reaction to thewarblazer's amazing fanart should get Marvel thinking about how good X-Men like Wolverine, Cyclops and Colossus look in these two-color costumes.

Cyclops, a.k.a. Scott Summers, is the X-Men's core team leader and one of the first characters to appear in the franchise. As a human/mutant hybrid, Cyclops has the power to launch massive bursts of energy from his eyes that are regulated through the use of a specially designed visor. Despite his calm and collected demeanor, he tends to lose it when in the presence of a fellow team member, Wolverine.
