Since Charles Xavier founded Krakoa as a sovereign mutant nation, the bizarre drug cult that worships mutants, and several enemy nations that refuse to acknowledge Krakoa as a peer. In the X-Force #11, the namesake team prepares for battle with Russia, and Beast calls up Colossus to defend his new homeland against his old one.

According to Marvel's May solicitations, Wolverine's work investigating the Flower Cartel has turned up ties to Russia, a non-treaty nation that has already earned the X-Men's Marauders team as enemies. Thanks to Logan's intelligence, the team learns that the country has gone beyond refusing to work with Krakoa to actively working with its enemies, including Xeno. Apparently, Beast's first instinct is to recruit a mutant who would have some familiarity with their new foe. The cover depicts Colossus fighting Omega Red, a murderous super-soldier with ties to the Russian government.
Colossus has had a cameo appearance in the recent X-Force #7, but hasn't ed the team yet, seemingly preferring a quiet life of painting and coming to with his past rather than returning to battle. Since his first appearance in Giant-Size X-Men, where he is shown using his organic steel armor to help him do farm work, Piotr Rasputin has treated combat as a necessary but painful sacrifice rather than as a way of life. Colossus would multiply X-Force's offensive and defensive capabilities, and provide important insight when it comes to dealing with Russia, both in fighting its government and in navigating terrain that's notoriously inhospitable to opposing armies. But whether the gentle giant is willing to buy into Beast's high-risk, low-ethics statecraft remains to be seen.
