With a brilliant promo on this week's episode of RAW on Netflix, WWE Backlash on May 10. While some fans may turn their nose at the thought of a "wrestler's wrestler" like Gunther tangled in a feud with an announcer, this is exactly what the Ring General needed to revitalize his career.

We've seen wrestlers feud with announcers in the past, but perhaps this one may be the most intriguing example ever. McAfee, a former NFL punter, has gained notoriety as a sportscaster and as an announcer for World Wrestling Entertainment. He's also shown that he's got enough promo skills to make fans care about what should be a squash match. Given his stunning loss at 'Mania, this could be just what the doctor ordered for the Ring General.

Pat McAfee’s Raw Promo: The Perfect Babyface Presentation

The Announcer Ripped Into Gunther To Set Up Their Clash

Pat McAfee's promo is being unanimously praised as one of the best ever on RAW. He painted his life as the classic "American dream" trajectory, mentioning that he is an average guy who has received plenty of blessings in his life, before turning his attention to Gunther's heinous actions. Pat was intense and arrogant at times, but mostly, he played the part of a noble babyface perfectly, especially when he mentioned coming to Michael Cole's defense.

McAfee came off as sincere and loyal. He also appealed to the average person by saying that he had always been a bit of an underdog throughout his life, but that he would still take the fight right to Gunther. It won't be the announcer's first bout in WWE, but it will certainly be his toughest.

It's Time for WWE to it Pat McAfee Is Not an Announcer Anymore

Former NFL player turned broadcaster Pat McAfee has become more of a 'celebrity guest' than a broadcaster on WWE programming.

It's the classic Rocky story, and a cornerstone of pro wrestling: an underdog who rises to the top by having to challenge insurmountable odds. Pat sounded like a normal guy who'd finally been pushed too far. The WWE Universe can certainly relate to that perspective, ensuring an instant connection with the audience. McAfee's promo was spectacular because it made the audience care for him, meaning that Gunther will achieve massive amounts of heat when he beats up the announcer mercilessly.

Gunther’s Post-WrestleMania Setback and the Need for a Heel Revival

The Way He Lost His Title Was Totally Out of Character for the Ring General

When Jey Uso won the Rumble and challenged Gunther, many fans and critics figured it would be just another successful title defense for the dominant champion. Instead, he was upset, dropping the belt after a 258-day reign. However, it was more the way that Gunther lost that had people scratching their heads.

Of course, Uso is a legitimate star and a certain WWE Hall of Famer, eventually. He also had a ton of momentum and the crowd on his side. But for him to tap out The Ring General was shocking. It also took a lot of the 'unstoppable aura' away from the Austrian, making fans wonder what would be next for him. It's hard to build a character of a monster heel and then recover from such a one-sided loss.

Why Beating McAfee at Backlash Will Cement Gunther as WWE’s Top Heel

The only real outcome that makes sense in this match is if Gunther pummels Pat McAfee into the mat, regaining some of the heat he lost at 'Mania. While it would be fine for the former NFL player (a legitimate athlete, in his own right) to get in some offense, for the most part, this bout should be the Ring General's chance to remind the WWE Universe why he's a dominant heel and one of the promotion's cornerstones.

Another positive aspect of this feud is that it will also get Gunther a lot of mainstream exposure, as McAfee hypes all the WWE PLEs on his wildly successful talk show. Pat is a celebrity beyond sports and entertainment, and that exposure will only benefit Gunther's profile from here on. That sets the superstar up for a summer run back to title contention. McAfee's spectacular promo on WWE Raw on Netflix could be the first step that leads Gunther to a hot enough spree that he headlines WrestleMania 42 in New Orleans next year.
