Z-Man Games and Blizzard have released a full trailer for the Pandemic System tabletop adventure. Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion for World of Warcraft, originally released in 2008, and now it's primed to make its board game debut.
WoW will be crossing over with Pandemic, the classic board game in which players must work together to stop the spread of disease. Up to four players team up for cooperative strategy-based gameplay, which requires forward-thinking and lots of planning to beat. Pandemic System games follow the same formula, with spin-offs and expansions in the series previously having taken more fantastical approaches, such as Pandemic - Reign of Cthulhu. Earlier this month, Z-Man Games and Blizzard teased the WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Pandemic System board game, featuring iconic World of Warcraft characters and locations.
While the previous teaser for the collaboration left a lot to the imagination, World of Warcraft characters, such as Thrall, the warchief of the Horde, Varian Wrynn, King of Stormwind, and Sylvanas Windrunner, the Banshee Queen of the Forsaken. The World of Warcraft board game will also tweak the gameplay of previous Pandemic System games, introducing Quests and Hero Cards.
Glimpsed in the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King trailer, Hero Cards will give players additional perks including better equipment for increased attack power, special mounts which allow for more movements per turn, and even healing potions. As for the new Quest mechanic, players will find themselves moving across the frozen world to destroy relics of evil, battle monsters, and more. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King will launch sometime this year and will retail for approximately $59.99.
The Blizzard and Z-Man Games collaboration leaves the door wide open for similar WoW Pandemic System games in the future. World of Warcraft's many expansions could each lend themselves to the Pandemic board game formula well, and provide different gameplay experiences depending on which expansions were selected for the crossover releases. Unfortunately, Z-Man Games and Blizzard haven't yet revealed if the Wrath of the Lich King board game will be followed by similar World of Warcraft collaborations.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is one of the most beloved expansions for the iconic MMORPG, welcoming new history and lore to the game when it first released. It's easy to see why this expansion has been selected for the Pandemic System treatment, as it not only introduced the realm of Northrend, but also the Death Knight, World of Warcraft's first Hero Class. Players eager to learn more and pre-order their copy of the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King board game can do so via the Z-Man Games website.
