Wonder Woman 2 Titled Wonder Woman 1984 as Filming Begins

Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman sequel is now officially titled Wonder Woman 2 is set in the '80s almost a year ago, but now the news is official. Warner Bros. has also confirmed the second part of our exclusive scoop; namely, that Chris Pine will be returning as Diana's ally/lover Steve Trevor, despite having died a hero's death at the end of the first Wonder Woman movie.

According to WB's official press release, Wonder Woman 2 will "fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah". Jenkins previously revealed that Sebastian Ballesteros, aka. the male Cheetah, in the film. Other theories point to the actor playing another one of Diana's most famous male antagonists, including Doctor Psycho and Vandal Savage.

Both WB and Jenkins have specifically said that Pine is playing Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984, and even released the Gadot in the Wonder Woman sequel has also been released, along with details on the film's production team. Wonder Woman 1984 will feature many of the same crew as Jenkins' first DC movie, including director of photography Matthew Jensen, production designer Aline Bonetto, costume designer Lindy Hemming, and editor Richard Pearson. The sequel will be shooting in several different locations, including Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia, the UK, Spain, and the Canary Islands.

Wonder Woman 1984 is entering production at a time of change for the DC Extended Universe (as it's unofficially called). Walter Hamada took over as the president of DC Entertainment's film division earlier this year and has been actively re-configuring the developing DC movie slate ever since. Then, just this week, Jenkins congratulated Johns on his new role at DC shortly after the news broke, having previously collaborated with the writer on the script for the first Wonder Woman movie.

Despite being caught in the eye of the hurricane at DC, the Wonder Woman franchise appears to be proceeding as planned. It only makes sense, seeing as Jenkins' first movie is by far the DCEU's most universally acclaimed offering yet, as well as its second-highest grossing at the worldwide box office (not to mention, its top earner here in the States). Whatever the future holds for DC on the big screen, things are looking bright for Diana Prince and her friends. Now, onto Wonder Woman 1984!
