Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) shows up with a young wizard who needs training. The premise leaves out the immortal Juliet van Heusen (Bridgit Mendler), who developed a relationship with Justin.
During a recent press junket for the Waverly Place spinoff, ScreenRant's Rachel Foertsch asked Henrie about whether the series plans to touch on what happened between Justin and Juliet. In a candid response, Henrie talked about the responsibility of balancing different aspects of the Disney show. The actor and executive producer also said that they'd like as many of the original cast to return as possible, provided that schedules allowed for it. Henrie concludes by saying that it would be fun for Justin's wife to learn more about his past:
That's a great question. Part of our responsibility, as the team making this show, is to balance all those elements, right? Because I think every single fan has different elements that they appreciate about the show. So it's like, "How do you balance that, but at the same time, create a whole new show and make some of those things work organically into the show?" So that's a great question, and we have lots of episodes to get to work out things like that.
We definitely want as many of the original cast to come back on as possible. If their schedules allow it, we definitely will want them on the show, but it's about bringing them back in a way that pushes the story forward and doesn't just feel like an obligatory appearance because fans wouldn't like that as much as anything. So I think it would be a very fun episode at some point for my wife in the show to learn about my past. At some point, I'm sure we will definitely dive into that, but in the first season, there's a lot that they're learning and adjusting to, so we have to tease things out slowly.
What Henrie's Comments Mean For The Waverly Place Spinoff
Justin's Life Took A Different Path
It's unclear why Justin and Juliet break up. In the spinoff, Justin is married to a new character named Giada. Portrayed by Mimi Gianopulos, Giada is a mortal. She has two kids with Justin, named Milo and Roman. Their life is changed when Alex arrives with the young wizard Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown). The premise of the new show is that Justin is trying to have a normal family life, which could be complicated if he was married to the vampire Juliet.

Selena Gomez's New Wizards Of Waverly Place Update Perfectly Sets Up 1 Missing OG Character’s Return
One missing original character from the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel could be set up to return, according to new images released by Selena Gomez.
In the original series, Justin and Juliet do break up and get back together. It's possible that they grew apart or had different goals for their futures. The good news is, for viewers who enjoyed the relationship, it does sound like there is a desire to bring the character back and even to make sure the appearance counts if Wizards Beyond Waverly Place takes off.
Our Take On Juliet's Potential Return
Give The Spinoff Time
The team behind the spinoff, which includes writers and executive producers Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas alongside fellow EPs Gary Marsh, Gomez, and Henrie, have a tough task. Reading between the lines of Henrie's response about Juliet, it sounds like the spinoff wants to establish itself and the new cast before bringing back more actors from the original.
The series will premiere on Disney Channel with two episodes airing on October 29 at 8 PM ET. Then, the next day, the first eight episodes will be available on Disney+ and Disney Channel On Demand.
That's understandable, with the spinoff's ensemble also featuring newcomers like Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, and Taylor Cora, in addition to bringing back both David DeLuise and Jake T. Austin as Jerry and Max Russo, respectively. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will likely have more space to address the space if it is renewed and goes on for a few seasons.
