Psych follows the daily lives of Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster as Shawn pretends to be psychic, working cases for the local police department, and brings best friend Gus along for the ride. The show is witty and full of layered humor that tends to pay homage to shows and movies before it, specifically from the 1980s.
Shawn and Gus often have a hilarious and ideal friendship that is at the center of the entire show. Shawn and Gus have an ultimate best friend relationship and have hilarious chemistry, which was a big part of why the show was so successful. However, it's not the only fictional friendship that will stand the test of time.
Turner And Hooch (1989)
Tom Hanks stars in this 80s movie as Detective Turner, who performs his job meticulously and by the book while also being careful in his personal life. Turner's friend is killed and he reluctantly begins to take care of the man's junkyard dog, Hooch.
Turner is reluctant at first, for obvious reasons, as the dog is chaotic and makes a mess, but eventually realizes Hooch could help him solve his friend's murder. The unconventional approach to solving the crime and the different personalities of the main characters, even if one is a dog, is similar to Psych.
Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)
Harold and Kumar follows the two characters as they become obsessed with going to White Castle to get some food after seeing a commercial while high.
The two get into increasingly outrageous situations, and the quiet Harold eventually reaches his breaking point. The two are great friends and have similar chemistry to Shawn and Gus, as Shawn is more care-free but Gus has his breaking point from time to time.
21 Jump Street (2012)
21 Jump Street follows two bumbling undercover cops as they try to figure out who are the dealers of a dangerous drug at a local high school. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play the cops posing as high school students with hilarious results.
The two have surprising and consistent chemistry, similar to Shawn and Gus on Psych, and tend to mess things up most of the time, but the two do succeed when it counts.
Weekend At Bernie's (1989)
Weekend At Bernie's follows two co-workers and best friends who agree to go out and party for the weekend at their boss's house. The two agree without knowing that their boss Bernie plans to have them killed for uncovering his fraudulent actions.
The plan goes awry when Bernie is killed instead, and the two friends decide to act like he's alive throughout the weekend to clear their names and have time to party. The friends' antics throughout are similar to Shawn and Gus, and the at times morbid nature is similar to Psych as well.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Hot Fuzz as two police officers in a small town with no crime. Frost and Pegg are always a good team, and Hot Fuzz is no different.
Simon Pegg portrays the overly serious officer to Frost's thrill-seeking officer, which is a similar dynamic to Psych, as Shawn is willing to take risks while Gus usually wants to play it safe. The two operate on their own outside of the police force, similar to Psych as well.
Wayne's World (1992)
Wayne's World follows Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) as their public access television show is picked up by a producer (Rob Lowe) for primetime television. The two are best friends and just want to party and have fun with their own show.
They find that their producer wants them to change everything about their show, which makes them fight back for creative control. Shawn and Gus have a similar friendship to Wayne and Garth, as each friendship has fun and offbeat chemistry.
The Goonies (1985)
The Goonies follows a young group of friends who go on a treasure hunt to try to raise money and save their homes from being destroyed by a property developer.
There is action, adventure, danger, and a bit of romance throughout the film, with a strong group of friends at the center of it all, which makes The Goonies a great film for Psych fans to watch.
Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves star as Bill and Ted, two high school students who need help on their history project or else Ted will be sent off to military school and their band will break up. The wild and offbeat film introduces time travel so the two can get real-life experience for their project.
From Socrates to Abraham Lincoln, Bill and Ted bring back historic characters to help them with their project while making jokes along the way. Shawn and Gus have been friends since childhood, just like Bill and Ted, and are just as inseparable.
The Nice Guys (2016)
Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe star in The Nice Guys as two unconventional private detectives who team up for a case and discover a hidden conspiracy they try to bring to light.
The two have great chemistry, mostly making fun of each other throughout the film, but are able to solve the mystery despite the jokes. Shawn and Gus from Psych are similar, as although they spend most of their time making jokes, they are still able to solve the case each and every episode.
Planes, Trains, And Automobiles (1987)
Steve Martin and John Candy star in this comedy of errors as two travelers trying to make it home for the holidays, but the unlikely pair find trouble at every turn. The two are forced to travel together even though they don't get along at first because of their completely opposite personalities.
While Shawn and Gus have more similar personalities in comparison, it's still a great movie to check out for the outrageous and hilarious antics the two get into and the relationship they build along the way.
