Between the Cyberpunk 2077, it feels as if developer CD Projekt Red is devoting more attention to the former than it is to the latter. From the new Witcher game in development with the updated and more advanced Unreal Engine 5 to the next-gen update for Witcher 3, it seems as if the bulk of CDPR's focus is fixed firmly on The Witcher franchise and not Cyberpunk 2077, which is still recovering from its launch day troubles. It's clear that Cyberpunk 2077 still has plenty of potential left to give, and though more DLC for that game is on the way, it seems as if The Witcher will continue to be the main focus of CDPR for the foreseeable future.
Although CDPR has improved its much-maligned sci-fi RPG, introducing much-needed quality-of-life fixes and even updating Cyberpunk 2077's romance options, like Judy and Panam, the developer has remained relatively radio silent on new content. There was the announcement that a story expansion was in the works with a release date. The catch, however, is that not only is the expansion slated for next year, but there has also been little indication of more content to follow, with the future of The Witcher franchise instead getting more attention over the previous few months.
Cyberpunk 2077 is in a much better place now than it was at launch, but the game is still far from what CDPR promised. While the milestone of 18 million units sold for 2077 is a good sign, it's a fraction of the Witcher 3's overall units, which currently total upward of 40 million. However, considering that CDPR is pushing the next-gen Witcher 3 upgrades, the developer is seemingly more interested in the game that works rather than wasting resources further refining the one that doesn't. Moreover, CDPR also assured Cyberpunk 2077 fans of post-launch content similar to The Witcher 3 - specifically two massive expansion packs that add to the narrative and gameplay. However, the first expansion will not release until next year, almost three years since the game released.
Why The Witcher Is Receiving More Focus Than Cyberpunk 2077
Although new Witcher game focusing on a new school. CDPR has remained vague and elusive regarding further information on new content for Cyberpunk 2077, which is still to achieve the vision the studio set out prior to its release. This may create an atmosphere of uncertainty for players, and discourage those from sticking around for future updates.
It remains to be seen how Cyberpunk 2077 will progress after its most recent 1.5 update, but the focus on The Witcher over the last few months could come as discouraging to those hoping for it to make substantial progress. Two years is a long time to wait for an expansion, and although The Witcher is tried and tested, seemingly moving focus away from Cyberpunk to work on different projects could be divisive. New DLC is sure to come, but with a new entry in The Witcher saga now confirmed, it's unclear if redeeming Cyberpunk 2077 is still top of CDPR's priorities.
