Kaer Morhen is one of the most iconic and well-known locations in the Witcher franchise and also serves as the tutorial area at the start of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Nevertheless, at the start of Geralt's journey, players do not spend much time in the Witchers' citadel, as they are hurried outside to meet with Ciri and practice combat with Vesemir. Most fans likely think little of the location and are excited to see where the story leads after the appearance of the Wild Hunt in Geralt's dream. However, there will naturally be some who wish to revisit the home of the Witchers and explore the areas blocked off during the tutorial segment.

Fortunately, returning to Kaer Morhen is indeed possible during the main story of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. In fact, the Witchers' keep is connected to an entire miniature region where players can explore landmarks, engage in side quests, and collect exclusive loot, such as the Wolven Armor Set. However, Kaer Morhen is not accessible during the early portions of the story. Instead, players are only able to return to this citadel during the main story quest, "Ugly Baby."

Unlocking Access to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3

Geralt returns to Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3

To begin "Ugly Baby" and get to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players must first complete the prerequisite of following all of Ciri's trails in Novigrad, Skellige, and Velen. According to the community-run quests in The Witcher 3 must be completed for access to Kaer Morhen to be unlocked for Geralt. Depending on how much side content players engage with during their playthrough, this quest chain can take a few hours to much longer.

After completing "Va Fail, Elaine," players must speak with the baron's sergeant to let him know that Geralt will be taking Uma, the "ugly baby," back to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. According to gameplay by YouTuber Al Valentyn, players will not return to Kaer Morhen immediately after collecting Uma.

Instead, a long cutscene will play out of Geralt meeting with Emhyr at the capital and then speaking with Yennefer. Eventually, players will arrive in Kaer Morhen, only to be greeted by a forktail monster in The Witcher 3. After a close call with the beast, fans will enter the fort and leave Uma with Vesemir. Players must then continue onward to complete "Ugly Baby," after which they can freely travel to and from Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3.
