Will Trent star and co-executive producer Ramón Rodríguez teases a tough time ahead for Will and Angie ahead of the show's return. When viewers last caught up with the crime drama, Will (Rodríguez) agreed to turn over Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen) for police misconduct. It's an especially gutting development because, just as the finale was starting, Will was imagining a blissful future with Angie. It's a lot to contend with, as Will Trent season 3 premieres January 7 at 8 PM ET on ABC.

Speaking with TV Insider, Rodríguez shares that Will and Angie won't have an easy go of it for several episodes. The actor says that, eventually, the former couple will get to a better place with each other. But as the third installment kicks off, Rodríguez cautions that both characters have their reasons for being upset. Read the quote below:

It’s really, really rough in the first several episodes, and once Will and Angie finally do get to be face to face, it’s not an easy thing. They both have their reasons for being upset at each other, and Will has his reasons of why he did what he did, and so it’s really complicated, and hopefully audiences will be happy.

Angie's Season 2 Fate Explained & What Rodríguez's Latest Comments Mean

It's Not Going To Be An Easy Road Back

The Will Trent season 2 finale, which is directed by executive producer Liz Heldens, who co-wrote the script with Kath Lingenfelter, is appropriately weighty. It turns out that Angie had been covering for a young girl that she'd bonded with, essentially helping the young girl evade capture as she killed child molestors. That had a massive impact on both the romantic hopes and the friendship between Will and Angie, though it doesn't seem like it has had a lasting impact on her job.

Angie is getting a new love interest as well, with Felicity and Scandal alum Scott Foley among the new additions to the cast. Based on Rodríguez's comments and the casting details, it sounds like Angie and Will are due to face some obstacles before they find their way back to each other.

Our Take On The Will & Angie Story

It's A Classic Trope

Ramon Rodriguez as Will Trent in Will Trent season 2, episode 2

Adapting the novels by Karin Slaughter, Will Trent is going in a classic direction by making things harder for Will and Angie. It's too soon to tell if they'll end up together or not, but it's no surprise that a bit of conflict and a few familiar guest actors are being put in their path before they get a second try at a happy ending.
