Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Wicked, the movie and the Broadway musical.Wicked, in many ways, connects back to the original The Wizard of Oz film, as well as the books that inspired it. From the Wicked Witch of the East's slippers to the flying monkeys, many pieces come into play for Dorothy's journey when she eventually enters Oz. The start of the first Wicked film even shows a brief clip of Dorothy walking down the Yellow Brick Road, as well as Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) confirming the Wicked Witch has been melted by the little girl from Kansas.
While it's known a tornado brings Dorothy to the Wicked's magic system is vague, but the first half of the story sets up the plot points that will eventually result in Dorothy crash-landing in Munchkinland. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) finds herself navigating a treacherous landscape of magical and political power, where one character's unique abilities will eventually have devastating consequences.
Madame Morrible Reveals Controlling the Weather Is Her Specialty in Wicked
Madame Morrible's Magic Powers In Wicked Could Explain How Dorothy Got Here
While magic s are presently rare in Oz, there are still a handful, including Michelle Yeoh's Madame Morrible. Not just anyone can perform devastating spells, as is the case for Wicked's magical Grimmerie book, Madame Morrible succeeds in her ability to manipulate the weather.

Elphaba's Dance With Glinda In Wicked Explained
One of the most powerful scenes in 2024's Wicked is at the Ozdust Ballroom, and it has a lot to do with Elphaba's unique dance.
When a rainstorm rolls in, Madame Morrible calms everyone down and tells them "weather is her specialty." With a wave of her hands, she calms down the storm and stops the rain itself. This is the main demonstration of her magical abilities in the first Wicked movie, and it is a remarkable feat. Along with this gift, Madame Morrible is also adept at manipulating others to get what she wants, which could be why she would summon Dorothy to the Land of Oz.
Morrible Could Be Responsible for Bringing Dorothy to Oz
It would Look Bad For Madame Morrible & The Wizard of Oz If They Directly Killed Elphaba's Sister
Madame Morrible does not just work as the Wizard of Oz's (Jeff Goldblum) right hand; she is the one who publicly denounces Elphaba, painting her as a threat to all Ozians. She pushes this narrative, and as seen in the stage musical, will do anything within her abilities to maintain appearances, keep her position secure, and pursue Elphaba. And as the Broadway show's character concludes, killing the Wicked Witch of the East, Elphaba's sister, could get Elphaba to come out of hiding.
In the show, Madame Morrible makes it look like an accident by creating the tornado that destroys Nessarose.
However, to keep her name, as well as Oz's name, clean, Madame Morrible would want this death to look like a freak accident with as few ties to them as possible. Even though Nessarose (Marissa Bode) is disliked by this point in the Wicked musical plot by much of Munchkinland, it would look bad if the Wizard's second-in-command openly killed her. In the show, Madame Morrible makes it look like an accident by creating the tornado that destroys Nessarose. Another possibility is that Madame Morrible wanted the tornado to bring someone to Oz who could do the job for her, shifting the blame onto Dorothy even when it looks like a naturally occurring tragedy.

Wicked's Villain Twist Explained: Why That Character Works With The Wizard
The ending of Wicked includes several twists and turns, with one revealing that a specific character is a villain working for the Wizard of Oz.
While it's not confirmed if this is true in the Wicked movie universe, and it is unknown what Wicked Part 2 will do with Dorothy and this storyline from the show, it would not be surprising for Yeoh's character to use her weather abilities to try to kill Nessarose in an attempt to flush out the Wicked Witch of the West.
