Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) always gets the name of Boq (Ethan Slater) wrong in Wicked's Shiz University, Boq is one of the first individuals she encounters. Glinda and Boq are from different parts of Oz as Glinda is from the Upper Uplands and Boq is a Munchkin from Munchkinland. They are both enrolled as students at Shiz University and Boq is immediately smitten with Glinda.

Boq spends much of the first Wicked movie fruitlessly pursuing his romantic interest in Glinda, only to end up with Nessarose (Marissa Bode), while Glinda is fixated on Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). When Wicked: For Good's story will explore the strain this has on Boq and Nessarose's relationship, while Boq still pines for a woman who always calls him Bick.

Glinda Gets Boq's Name Wrong Because She Doesn't Care To It

He Is Not On Her Radar

Since Boq is not someone that she aims to impress or someone she grows to care about, Glinda does not care about getting his name correct. When she first arrives at Shiz, she is focused on finding peers to impress, and a Munchkin is not someone that she cares about impressing. To Glinda, Boq is little more than a distraction when they first meet and when he asks her to the Ozdust Ballroom. Even though Boq becomes friendly with some of Glinda's peers, including her beloved Fiyero, Boq is hardly ever on her social radar.

Why Glinda Can’t Do Magic In Wicked

Elphaba's magical abilities are a major part of the story in the adaptation of the Wicked musical, but why can't Glinda do magic as well?

2

Due to the genuine and unexpected bond that she forms with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda takes time and effort to get to know Elphaba. However, nothing like this occurs between Glinda and Boq, and so there is never any reason for her to get to know him, let alone to learn his name. She is not trying to hurt Boq by calling him Bick, but it is still not something that she cares to correct, as Boq is never at the forefront of her focus.

It is tragic that Boq spends so much of his time fiercely obsessed with Glinda and believing he is in love with her while she does not even know his name. Glinda repeatedly calling him Bick should make it glaringly obvious that they have no romantic future together. Instead of this being the wake-up call that Boq needs, he cannot let go of his feelings, and is not a good partner to Nessarose, someone who does love him, and who he does not realize he is deeply hurting.

Boq is not in love with Glinda as much as he is in love with the idea of her physical beauty and the perfect facade she presents to the public.

The tragedy only deepens in Wicked: For Good's story, as even after Boq graduates from Shiz and has a life with Nessarose, he still pines for Glinda. It is also tragic that he never really got to know the real Glinda. Boq is not in love with Glinda as much as he is in love with the idea of her physical beauty and the perfect facade she presents to the public. Glinda not knowing Boq's name is at the root of harsh truths about Wicked's characters.
