Summary
- Aladdin 2's future is uncertain as there has been no official confirmation from Disney, and a tweet by Mena Massoud suggests it may have been scrapped.
- Disney's CEO Bob Iger's statement about scaling back on new franchise content and big budgets raises concerns about the movie's cancellation.
- The previously announced live-action Aladdin spinoff, Genies, was also scrapped, but there is still hope for the Prince Anders spinoff to pave the way for Aladdin 2's revival.
2019's live-action Aladdin allowed audiences to be transported to Agrabah in a whole new way and left audiences excited for Aladdin 2, but it hasn't happened yet. Disney has shown that part of their ever-evolving content strategy is to reboot their familiar animated franchises in live-action form. They've given this treatment to movies like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and The Little Mermaid, all with varying degrees of success. It is much rarer for one of these live-action remakes to start a new franchise, but that looked to be the case with Aladdin.
Although not every live-action Disney remake has been met with high praise and huge box office numbers, Aladdin's box office success made it a smash hit. After generating over $1 billion, it is no surprise that Disney announced a sequel meant to feature Mena Massoud's Aladdin, Naomi Scott's Jasmine, and Will Smith's Genie all return. Unfortunately, audiences might never get to see if Aladdin 2 is able to live up to the original movie's success, as it seems the project has been canceled indefinitely.

Aladdin 2: Confirmation & Everything We Know About The Live-Action Disney Sequel
Guy Ritchie's Alive-action remake of Aladdin was a huge hit, and despite Aladdin 2 being confirmed in 2020 the sequel isn't here. Here's what we know.
Disney Hasn't Provided Any News On Aladdin 2's Status, But The Chances Aren't Good
Although official cancelation news has not been given by Disney, it does not seem likely that the movie will be released anytime soon. In a 2022 interview with Massoud shared a bleak update that the highly-anticipated sequel to Aladdin was looking "Very unlikely at this point".
Even though the movie was initially confirmed by Disney, their lack of response to Massoud's post and viewer speculation that the project has been canceled is worrying. Disney CEO Bob Iger told Disney live-action remake could be part of that plan. There is always a chance that Disney will get the new Aladdin 2 script eventually and is pleased with it to the point where the movie does get back on track, but whether that will happen is unclear.
What Happened To The Other Live-Action Aladdin Spinoffs
Back in 2015, it was announced that there would be a live-action Aladdin film called Genies that introduced audiences to the backstory of one of the most beloved characters of the franchise. The movie was set to reveal how Genie ended up in the lamp in the first place and was designed to lead into the Aladdin live-action project. It ended up being scrapped, with no official explanation as to why, and the live-action Aladdin movie was released on its own. Now with the live-action Aladdin 2 being seemingly shelved as well, there is only one more project still in the works.
It appears as though the announced spinoff focusing on Prince Anders is still on track to eventually be released on Disney+. While there have been no details shared about when a release can be expected, its star Billy Magnussen shared a promising Prince Anders spinoff update in 2022. He shared that the project was still in development and was confirmed to be moving forward, as well as that he enjoyed creating a new world for this under-explored Aladdin character to exist in. Perhaps if the Anders spinoff is successful enough, Aladdin 2 will regain momentum at Disney at last.
