While the ability to absorb radiation provides an advantage over foes like Hulk and the Silver Surfer, it also has drawbacks. Overusing this power can cause Red Hulk to revert to his human form, which poses a serious risk in combat. The constant balance between maintaining his power and avoiding a loss of control adds an extra layer of danger for Ross. Additionally, his control over his anger issues may give him an edge in battle, but they also make him vulnerable to his own limits, unlike the traditional Hulk, whose rage constantly fuels his growth in strength with no upper limit.

Red Hulk's Identity Isn't Split Like the Hulk's

As well as his energy absorption, Red Hulk's biggest advantage is his tactical mind. General Ross, a seasoned military strategist, retains full control over his transformation, unlike Bruce Banner, whose Hulk persona is often more destructive than strategic. This mental clarity allows Ross to engage in battle with precision, tactical awareness, and planning, making him a formidable opponent in a totally different way to Bruce. Ross is such a genius tactician, even Captain America and Doctor Doom have professed respect for his insight.

Ross' control over his transformation again makes him particularly dangerous for the Hulk, who is much more reckless and emotional in combat. While the Hulk may rely on raw power, the Red Hulk’s intelligence allows him to outsmart his foes and use weaponry and his surroundings to his advantage. Indeed, Red Hulk killed Abomination by using a custom gun to finish their fight - something Bruce Banner's Hulk could never do.

The reasons behind Red Hulk's heated hue are more than just a visual way to distinguish him from his rival. The distinction gives him unique abilities and weaknesses that separate him from Bruce entirely. It's a visual representation of the unique dynamic these characters have and the different ways they gained their powers. Red Hulk's on-screen introduction in Captain America: Brave New World expands on both the potential and the limitations of gamma-related powers, uniquely defining Ross in the Marvel Pantheon as different to the original Hulk.
