Dr. Robotnik seems to be a hero in the first trailer for Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer, as this is a rarity in the franchise. However, the trailer does provide a slight explanation, with the full Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie undoubtedly giving more context to Dr. Robotnik's heroic arc.

The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is out now, giving a first look at the exciting third entry in the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie series. The first trailer reveals just how important Shadow the Hedgehog will be to the thrid film, with GUN bringing in Team Sonic to help take on the new alien threat. Unfortunately, Shadow seems to be too powerful for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, leading them to realize that they will have to make some risky movies. However, one of these moves is shocking even for the most well-versed Sonic the Hedgehog fans.

Shadow Is Too Powerful For Team Sonic Alone

As it turns out, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have to enlist Dr. Robotnik's help after realizing how dangerous Shadow the Hedgehog truly is. The trailer shows what seems to be Team Sonic's first encounter with Shadow, taking place in the middle of a city after a massive explosion. Although Team Sonic is as cocky as usual, Shadow easily takes down the trio, with not even Sonic's speed being enough to save him. Team Sonic realizes that they will need more than brute force to take down the threat, and if anyone is an expert at fighting alien hedgehogs, it's Robotnik.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are able to track down Dr. Robotnik, although a lot has changed since his disappearance after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Robotnik's defeat at the hands of Sonic has seemingly caused him to spiral, with him being messy, overweight, and unmotivated. However, Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik agrees to help Team Sonic, with the former Sonic the Hedgehog villain now ing the team of protagonists in order to take down Shadow. However, Dr. Robotnik undoubtedly has some ulterior motives.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will properly introduce Shadow, and there’s little doubt that the sequel will nail this fan-favorite game character.

He Wants To Be The Only One Who Can Take Over The World

Dr. Robotnik famously has a fierce rivalry with the blue blur, so it may seem has a strange decision for him to ally with Team Sonic. However, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer does see Robotnik explain what his purported motivations are. After Sonic asks for his help, Robotnik says that he might as well help save the world if he can't take over it. It is possible that Robotnik's ego may want him to stop someone else from succeeding where he failed, leading to his heroic arc in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Robotnik probably has secret motivations that Team Sonic doesn't know about, as it is doubtful that he would only help the heroes out of the goodness of his heart. Dr. Robotnik has always been obsessed with stealing the powers of Sonic and Knuckles, and since he is now aware of an alien even more powerful than them, it would make sense for him to want Shadow the Hedgehog's powers. The trailer sees Robotnik meet Gerald Robotnik, and this could hint that the villain is operating in the background for a yet-unknown purpose.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will feature a showdown between Sonic and Shadow, but I hope the sequel doesn’t ignore a great element of the first two movies.

Will Dr. Robotnik Stay A Hero In Sonic 3 Or Become A Villain?

Could He Have A Real Change Of Heart?

It is entirely possible that Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik could have a change of heart, staying a hero after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, it seems far more likely that he will return to his villainous ways by the end of the movie. Robotnik's presumed secret plan could turn the tables near the end of the movie, making him the big bad of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 could follow a similar path to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Shadow's role in the trailer is already setting this up. In the second film, Knuckles was the antagonist throughout, only for him to unite with Sonic and Tails to fight Robotnik at the end of the movie. Since Shadow is an antihero, something similar could happen, with the events of the film leading to him fighting against Robotnik alongside Team Sonic. These motivation switches means that there are a lot of Shadow and Robotnik questions to be answered in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
