Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2

While Din Djarin may be the current owner of the Darksaber in The Mandalorian season 3, Bo-Katan Kryze is still better at using it. Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin inadvertently claimed the legendary Darksaber after defeating Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian season 2, and also unwittingly became the rightful ruler of Mandalore. This is a role Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze had hoped to reclaim, by winning the Darksaber for herself. According to Lore, the Darksaber must be won by combat; many Mandalorians appear to blame the Purge of Mandalore on Bo-Katan's having received it in a manner not in accordance with lore. She does not want to repeat this mistake, and so has lost everything she longed for.

Still, Bo-Katan is the better wielder. In The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2, Din struggles to use the Darksaber against Alamite raiders. Bo-Katan later uses the Darksaber against a frightening crustacean cyborg scavenger, and she has no trouble wielding the blade and slaying the foe. The episode makes the contrast very visible indeed.

Why Din Djarin Struggles To Use The Darksaber

Mandalorian struggling with Darksaber in Season 3

This isn't the first time Din Djarin has struggled to wield the Darksaber. The same problems are visible in The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, and the Armorer explained this unusual lightsaber requires its wielder to be focused in mind and body. They need a singular focus, which is why Moff Gideon was able to use it with ease; he is dedicated to restoring the Empire across the galaxy.

In comparison, it's been implied that Djarin doesn't see himself as fit to rule Mandalore. In fact, he doesn't have any singular focus due to his conflicting relationships and struggles with identity. This is why the Darksaber has been so heavy for Djarin that he even once injured himself as seen in The Book of Boba Fett. As such, it seems as though Djarin's skills have yet to improve by The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2.

Why Bo-Katan DOESN'T Struggle To Use The Darksaber

Bo-Katan Wields Darksaber in Mandalorian Season 3

Naturally, the same rules of the Darksaber apply to Bo-Katan, though she wields the weapon with ease against Djarin's captor. This is presumably because Bo-Katan possesses much greater confidence about her identity, even when she has lost faith in her mission to restore Mandalore. She has very little issue slaying the cyborg and saving Djarin, and returns the Darksaber - with almost no hesitation - when the danger has ed. It seems Din Djarin and Bo-Katan won't fight for the Darksaber, because it is presumably against Bo-Katan's personal code of honor to duel with an ally.

This code of honor probably contributes to Bo-Katan's ability to use the Darksaber as well. She will not compromise her beliefs, even for her mission, and so possesses a degree of internal consistency Din Djarin lacks. She knows who she is, and she knows what she stands for; she will not be broken by circumstances beyond her control. In contrast, Din compromised his own beliefs; he broke his personal creed twice, by removing his Mandalorian helmet. He may have redeemed himself in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2, but he is still conflicted at heart.
