Netflix's new drama miniseries Peter Kell (Kevin Bacon).

Life at the Kells' luxurious island compound seems perfect, as Michaela prepares for a high-society Labor Day weekend, but everything changes when Simone's older sister, Devon (Meghann Fahy), arrives. Devon's unwelcome intrusion brings to light how much Simone is hiding from Michaela, including her relationship with Ethan. Sirens eventually builds to Simone receiving a proposal from Ethan, which she decides to reject. Their break-up leads to shocking consequences on both sides, including Ethan's big fall and Simone's shocking decision in Sirens' ending.

Simone Likely Didn't Push Ethan Off The Cliff (Even Though He Says She Did)

Sirens Leaves Some Ambiguity

Ethan mysteriously disappears midway through Sirens, leading Simone to believe he abandoned her. However, he shockingly returns with her father in tow and asks her to marry him. After talking to him in private, Simone rejects Ethan's marriage proposal, leaving the older man distraught and unable to understand her decision. As the chaotic night goes on, Simone frets over her reunion with her father and Ethan becomes increasingly drunk. Eventually, the two run back into each other outside, near the house's steep cliff down to the beach below.

Sirens Ending Explained: Why Simone Makes That Big Decision About Michaela & Peter

Sirens' ending sees Simone make a shocking choice about Michaela and Peter, but does that really make her the true monster of this Netflix story?

1

Ethan calls Simone a monster while walking increasingly close to the cliff. She tries to warn Ethan to watch where he is going, but the camera cuts away from them just before he falls, leaving exactly how he fell unclear. Sirens hints that Simone tried to save him but was unable to stop his fall and went to get help right away. However, when Ethan wakes up in the hospital the next day, he tells a different story, accusing Simone of pushing him off the cliff.

The way the scene is filmed in Sirens does leave the possibility that Simone could have pushed Ethan, but no one takes his statement seriously because of how unlikely it seems. Even though Simone does make some bad decisions, it would not have made sense for her to push Ethan. More likely, she truly did try to warn him, but Ethan was so drunk and angry he was unable to properly understand. Ethan simply lost his balance and fell, or, even more strangely, perhaps something else made it happen.

Was Something Supernatural Really Happening In Sirens?

There Are Some Inexplicable Moments In Sirens

Strangely, the day before Ethan fell from the cliff, Simone had a dream that he had fallen and been impaled on driftwood. Though this only partially comes true, it is unusual that her dream ended up happening, hinting that some other force may have also played a role in Ethan falling. The same can also be said for several of the other events in Sirens; Devon and Peter even have a conversation about the strange dreams that the island seems to produce for him.

Many of the men in Sirens seem to be drawn in and pushed away by Devon, Simone, and Michaela in a manner that seems beyond their control.

Beyond Simone's dream of Ethan falling, Devon also has a dream-like experience with Michaela in the bathroom in which the two discuss the death of Devon and Simone's mother, with Devon waking up in a car immediately after. Additionally, in Sirens' finale, Peter and Simone have a panic attack at the same time, and both go to the same spot on the beach, as if they were being led there. Many of the men in Sirens seem to be drawn in and pushed away by Devon, Simone, and Michaela in a manner that seems beyond their control.

Where Was Sirens Filmed? Netflix TV Show's Filming Locations Explained

Netflix's Sirens takes influence from the monsters of Greek mythology, which meant a seaside location was critical to bring this story to life.

These slightly supernatural instances highlight Sirens' connections to Greek mythology and the lure of the sirens in myths. While some of the scenes can be slightly funny, as with Devon's suitors running down the beach after her, the allure of the show's sirens proves dangerous as well. Ultimately, though, Sirens' main characters are simply women trying to stay afloat in a world that has been harsh towards them. Rather than Sirens having anything truly supernatural at play, the moments are meant to symbolize the harm that the characters do as well as the harmful things done to them.
