White PS4 Bundled With Destiny 2

The sequel's 30 FPS on the Xbox One X -- raising questions about their servers' capabilities as well as highlighting the relationship between Activision and Sony PlayStation. Now, we have more news in the console-specific vein: PlayStation has announced that they will release a Glacier White PS4 Pro - but only bundled with Destiny 2.

A week ahead of the sequel's beta, PlayStation has announced the exclusive console will be available upon release of the game on September 8. According to the press release, the bundle will be comprised of the white PS4 Pro, a matching Dualshock 4 wireless controller, and a voucher for content that includes, "Legendary sword, Legendary player emote, Cabal Empire themed emblem."

Fans will have access to the previously revealed Destiny 2 DLC Expansions, along with other goodies like exclusive weaponry, gear, and ships. The non-Glacier White standalone PS4 Pro console currently costs $399, with the Destiny 2 Digital Deluxe Edition selling for $99.99. This PS4 Pro Destiny 2 bundle is currently available for pre-order at $449.99.

What gamers should not expect any time soon is a standalone white PS4 Pro. PlayStation apparently has no plans to release one. It remains unclear if consumer demand for this color is sufficient to force Sony's hand. We've seen silver, white, and gold versions of the PS4 Slim, however, so it could happen if enough gamers clamor for it.

Will fans shell out the cash for this bundle? Most likely, given the anticipation that has been building for the sequel. This type of console-specific content remains one of the most vexing aspects of the gaming industry, however. Could all of this exclusive weapons, gear, armor, multiplayer and "cooperative activities" mean that Destiny 2 could share the original game's somewhat unsatisfying core story?

It's impossible to know at this point, but given many fans' disappointment with this aspect of Destiny, it's a fair concern. Earlier this year it was reported that Bungie needed to release Destiny 2 seemingly no matter what. If their hand was forced, could the sequel similarly under-deliver, as many fans and critics perceived of the original? We'll find out soon enough.
