What You Can Expect from Interview With the Vampire
Interview With the Vampire blends the present with the past, where Louis de Pointe du Lac recounts his life story with journalist Daniel Molloy. Living in 1910 New Orleans, Louis becomes attracted to the mysterious Lestat de Lioncourt. Following his younger brother’s suicide, Louis struggles with his guilt and ultimately accepts Lestat’s offer to escape mortality and become a vampire.
Lestat introduces Louis to his immortal life of wealth and flamboyancy. Still, as Louis watches his family grow up and distance themselves from him, he begins to see vampirism as a curse. He struggles with the idea of killing innocent people and doesn’t share Lestat’s disregard for human life. After rescuing a young girl, Claudia from a fire and turning her into a vampire, they try to settle together as a family, but Louis and Lestat continue to clash with their feelings towards humanity and Claudia’s murderous appetite. As Louis laments to Molloy in his interview, living as a vampire is not the eternal happiness as many believe it to be.
The series brings an entirely new take into Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe, particularly in relation to the book's gay subtext. In the series, viewers can explicitly see Louis and Lestat’s profound and disturbing romantic relationship, something that was excluded from the 1994 film adaptation. Rice, who ed away in 2021, was a very strong er of LGBTQ+ rights and confirmed that Louis and Lestat were lovers in her story. Rolin Jones has taken the gay subtext and has adapted the series to fully explore issues of sexuality and race as well as allowing viewers a glimpse into the past.
The series stars Jacob Anderson as Louis, Sam Reid as Lestat, Eric Bogosian as Molloy and Bailey Bass as Claudia.
