Warning! Spoilers for the What We Do In The Shadows finale

The What We Do in the Shadows series finale has left viewers with plenty to ponder, particularly regarding Nandor’s future without Guillermo. FX’s beloved mockumentary series, which first aired in 2019 as a spinoff of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's 2014 cult-classic film, follows a group of vampire roommates navigating immortal life in modern-day Staten Island. Known for its absurd humor, endearing characters, and genre-bending creativity, the show earned widespread critical acclaim, including over 20 Emmy nominations.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, actor Kayvan Novak reflects on Nandor’s life without Guillermo, offering an amusing perspective on where the character could go next. After the film crew following the vampire household around for the past six seasons decides they've had enough footage, the long-running dynamic between Nandor (Novak) and his human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) reaches an abrupt resolution as the duo redefines their relationship as equals. Addressing the possibility of Nandor sticking to his vigilante arc, Novak shared:

I think it's just a fad, another fad. I've done some crime fighting, and then realized that he's also a mass murderer, and he is in danger of getting arrested himself, which actually is one storyline that I kind of thought would be fun, if, actually, there's a detective on the vampires' tail. Because I guess the authorities never really got close to them in any way, shape or form, whereas I guess they did in the movie, and then they just did a whole spinoff of those characters in the movie.

But it probably wouldn't have felt right in this world, you know, you just want to hang out with the vampires. And if there isn't a threat, then they just imagine there's one around the corner anyway, they're very paranoid. But yeah, man, it's been an incredible ride, incredible journey, and so I hope the fans, we give them closure, and in a beautiful way. That they don't feel short changed by it, but I think they will. I think you could give them any ending, and they'd be like, '[In a humorous voice] That was incredible!'

What Novak's Comments On The WWDITS Finale Mean

Will Guillermo & Nandor Live On In A Spin-Off?

Novak’s reference to law enforcement never coming close to the vampires highlights a key aspect of the series: despite their supernatural antics and often reckless behavior, real-world consequences rarely interfere. While the 2014 What We Do in the Shadows film did introduce police encounters and led to the 2018 spinoff Wellington Paranormal, the TV series kept its focus squarely on the vampires’ daily (and nightly) chaos, where external threats often pale in comparison to their self-inflicted problems.

I Never Expected What We Do In The Shadows’ Final Season To Be So Emotional, But Here We Are

While the final season of What We Do in the Shadows is still full of laughs, the complex dynamic between Guillermo and Nandor gets heavy.

Joking about Nandor’s decision to use his vampire skills to fight crime alongside Guillermo as "the Phantom Menace," Novak reflects the show's continued ability to blend humor with the absurd even in its final moments. Nonetheless, the duo's vigilante dream comes to an abrupt end in the What We Do in the Shadows' finale when the film crew begins packing up and Guillermo is forced to face the finality of human life, and, perhaps, the banality of vampirish evil.

After announcing on camera his decision to leave the house, Guillermo assures Nandor from the shadows of the shrinking set, “just because we don’t work together doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.” While it may be the end of the mockumentary, it surely isn't the end for these What We Do In The Shadows characters, even if it solely lives on in Novak's dream of a crime-fighting, vampire spinoff.

A Bittersweet End For The Iconic Duo

Novak’s playful reflection on Nandor’s potential vigilante turn perfectly highlights the absurd charm that made What We Do in the Shadows so beloved. Nandor dabbling in crime-fighting while oblivious to his own violent tendencies would be a lively addition to the franchise's irreverent humor. Although, what's more important to Novak seems to be delivering the right end to the offbeat vampire series.

As Novak acknowledges the need to give fans closure, we see the emotional core of the show in the tumultuous relationship between Nandor and Guillermo. What We Do In The Shadows finale avoided a neatly tied-up ending, but its choice to at least leave the two on an equal footing feels true to the show’s essence. The documentary crew may have wrapped filming, yet Novak’s words remind us that Nandor and Guillermo will continue on in perpetual misadventure, whether on-screen or in our imaginations.
