The ongoing fourth season of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows has introduced a new couple, Nandor and Marwa, who have an interesting backstory. The mockumentary has previously featured funny pairs who form romantic relationships that influence their personal arcs or even affect an episode or two.
The best couples on the show have unique traits that make them impossible to forget. They often have hilarious backstories and bond over the strangest things, like the way Nadja looks for every reincarnation of Gregor or how Jan got Nandor involved in a cult. As new episodes reveal more about the fan-favorite couples in the series, it’s the perfect time to look back at some of the best ones so far.
Jan & Nandor The Relentless
An important part of Nandor’s character arc in WWDITS happens when he gets depressed during his Accession Day party, which is a common problem for vampires because of their eternal lifespans. He stumbles upon a wellness center owned by a cheerful character named Jan, who soon invites him to her cult.
It’s revealed during an interview with Jan that the two of them are in a relationship or at least sleeping with each other. The experience transforms Nandor into a happy but questionable version of himself, as it’s obvious that Jan’s cult is feeding its lies. It’s a fascinating affair that shows just how vulnerable Nandor can be when he’s upset.
Gail & Nandor The Relentless
Gail is Nandor’s long-time on-and-off girlfriend who seems to be leading him on. She doesn’t make it clear how much she’s willing to commit to Nandor and will often send mixed signals. Their messy relationship has a negative effect on Nadja, which just makes her other housemates think that she’s threatened by Gail because she’s a woman.
The most unforgettable part of their arc takes place when it’s revealed that Gail has actually slept with a werewolf, which is a vampire’s worst enemy. This doesn’t faze Nandor at all, who actually encourages his housemates to meet her pack. He regrets this when they find Gail making out with a werewolf, though.
Charmaine & Sean Rinaldi
The vampires’ neighbors are some of the best side characters in WWDITS, as Charmaine and Sean are an amusing couple who were on the verge of losing each other thanks to Laszlo and Nandor’s “brain scramblies.”
The condition that almost forced the vampires to kill Sean actually improved his marriage, as he sees Charmaine with fresh eyes and recognizes how lucky he is to be her husband. The stark change in their dynamic is satisfying to watch, as it’s a lasting improvement in their relationship that has become a vital part of the show.
Nadja Of Antipaxos & Gregor
Gregor’s latest reincarnation, Jeff Suckler, is his least impressive version, but it doesn’t stop him from forming a relationship with the vampire Nadja. According to her, they are drawn to each other in every iteration of his life, all of which have ended by brutal decapitation.
It’s later revealed that every version of Gregor has been decapitated in secret by Laszlo, not out of jealousy, but due to concern for Nadja’s wellness. Gregor isn’t good for her, as she’s often stressed out by his actions. The unhealthy relationship they have ends up reinforcing the strength of Nadja and Laszlo’s eternal marriage.
Colin Robinson & Evie Russell
An underrated highlight of Colin’s storyline in the series happens when she meets an emotional vampire who functions similarly to himself. Instead of energy, she feeds off of emotions, which means she’s great at manipulating others and lying to make them pity her.
While they initially fight in a dramatic fashion in the office, they soon combine their forces to maximize the energy they can take away from others. Their relationship soon becomes unhealthy, as Evie begins making Colin look like a bad boyfriend to get her officemates to feel bad for her. The entire arc is wildly entertaining and sadly lasts for just one episode.
Colin Robinson & Sheila The Siren
During Colin and Laszlo’s quest to learn more about energy vampires, they come across a terrifying creature known as a siren who calls herself Sheila. She enchants both vampires with her irresistible singing, with Laszlo just barely able to escape by using his bat form.
Colin is left alone with the siren and he soon finds himself falling in love with her, even when she’s not singing. Even after he’s rescued and taken away by Laszlo, a telling scene shows Colin listening to Shiela’s voice over the radio, which implies that he still loves her. Their short-lived relationship emphasizes how much Laszlo cares for Colin, which is soon underscored by the energy vampire’s death.
Nandor The Relentless & Marwa
Nandor’s most recent misadventure involves the wily Djinn who has offered him 52 wishes. He uses most of them to find his perfect wife, with the process starting by resurrecting all 37 of his dead partners. After killing them off one by one when they don’t meet his criteria, he finally ends up with a sweet woman called Marwa.
Although she hasn’t appeared much in the series, Marwa has had a positive impact on Nandor. She inspires him to make a drastic change, which he believes will be good for their relationship. The show will hopefully portray more of their budding romance.
Nadja Of Antipaxos & Laszlo Cravensworth
Of course, the best couple on WWDITS has always been Nadja and Laszlo. The duo work together so well, with Nadja’s high energy often balanced out by Laszlo’s more chill vibe. They love each other unconditionally, with Laszlo in particular having sacrificed so much for Nadja.
At one point, Laszlo reveals that he was kicked out of a prestigious group for marrying Nadja. He would sacrifice everything to be with her, which is why it’s not surprising that they’re still so happy together despite being married for so many years. For her part, Nadja always expresses her attraction towards Laszlo and quickly resolves any issues that arise between them. She wasn’t even too angry about him ditching her during their planned trip to London.
