Summary
- Billy's character arc in Power Rangers Zeo was disappointing, as he no longer fought as a Power Ranger and didn't become the Gold Ranger.
- Billy moved to Aquitar during Zeo, where he married Cestria and created a strong connection with the planet.
- Billy technically made several appearances as the Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger again, including in "The Legendary Battle," "Grid Connection," and Once & Always. He also mentored the Cosmic Fury Rangers in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.
Billy Cranston, the original Blue Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is one of the franchise’s most important characters and continues to play a significant role in the Power Rangers seasons, with some of them returning in other shows and even serving as mentors for new teams.
David Yost’s Billy was the only of the original five Power Rangers to remain on Mighty Morphin until the show’s final episode. Billy’s journey would continue in Zeo, during which the character’s superhero career and personal life changed a lot. Although there is not a lot of information regarding what happened to Billy after he left Earth, his latest Power Rangers appearances helped fill those gaps. Billy was recently featured in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, which, alongside Once & Always, honored the original Blue Ranger’s legacy.

Power Rangers’ 10 Best Extra Rangers, Ranked
From Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger to newer characters, Power Rangers’ sixth or additional Rangers are usually the coolest heroes on the show.
Billy Stopped Being A Power Ranger At The Beginning Of Zeo
Billy was no longer on the battlefield
Following the destruction of the Command Center’s main level and the introduction of the Zeo crystals, the Power Rangers changed colors and costumes for the first time since the inception of the show. After three seasons in which the series used mostly footage from Zyuranger, Power Rangers moved to another Super Sentai show and reset the story. Although most of the Mighty Morphin characters minus Aisha returned for Zeo, the series now had a new lineup of Rangers colors. For example, Tommy became the Zeo Red Ranger, meaning former Mighty Morphin Red Rocky needed a new form.
As cool as having Jason back was, the way Zeo handled Billy’s character was disappointing.
Considering Power Rangers had now a main cast of six characters but a team of five core Rangers from Chouriki Sentai Ohranger, someone would be left out. Billy decided to give his Zeo crystal to Tanya, who became the Yellow Ranger. Rocky became the Blue Ranger, and Billy took on a “Zordon” role, operating from the Command Center to help the Power Rangers. Despite Billy’s new role on the show, the introduction of the Zeo Gold Ranger later on the show suggested he would become the team’s sixth Ranger, which did not happen.
The Original Blue Ranger Moved To Aquitar During Power Rangers Zeo
Billy married Cestria of Aquitar
Jason, Power Rangers’ original Red Ranger, returned during Zeo and replaced Trey of Triforia as the Gold Ranger. As cool as having Jason back was, the way Zeo handled Billy’s character was disappointing, especially considering what Yost has since shared about his experience on the set of the original Power Rangers show. The actor, who revealed he was harassed during the making of Mighty Morphin for being gay (via No Pink Spandex), eventually decided to quit the show. To write Billy out of the story, Zeo established that the former Blue Ranger was moving to another planet.

Earlier in the season, Billy had traveled to Aquitar, home of the Alien Rangers. There, he met Cestria, a local with whom he fell in love. After helping the Rangers of Aquitar and the planet’s locals a couple of times, Billy created a strong connection with that world and eventually moved there to marry Cestria. Zeo would be David Yost’s final Power Rangers appearance for almost 30 years, with the actor only reprising his role as Billy in 2023’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.
Billy Returned To Earth & Started A Company At Some Point
Billy became rich with his inventions
Although Billy never appeared in another canon Power Rangers movie or TV show until Once & Always, at least not without his helmet, some details about the character’s life after Zeo were later established. Once & Always revealed, for example, that Billy continued to live on Aquitar but also reestablished his life on Earth at some point. The former Blue Ranger started a company, Cranston Technologies, and became rich thanks to his inventions. Among Billy’s many properties was a new Command Center, designed after the Power Rangers’ original base in Mighty Morphin.
Billy Became The Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger Again A Few Times
"The Legendary Battle," "Grid Connection," and Once & Always
In theory, Billy should no longer be the Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger following the events of the original series. However, from Adam morphing into his Black Ranger form during In Space to all of the original Rangers returning in Once & Always, the Power Rangers universe has made it clear that the Mighty Morphin powers were all restored at some point. Not only that, but the Mighty Morphin crew got together again at least three times between the 1990s and the present day, with the Blue Ranger appearing in all of them.
The Mighty Morphin heroes were part of “The Legendary Battle,” the Super Megaforce crossover episode that celebrated the saga’s 20th anniversary. Likewise, Billy and the rest of his team showed up with their helmets on in Beast Morpher’s “Grid Connection,” during which Jason was the only one to appear in his civilian form. Lastly, Billy properly returned in Once & Always, which marked David Yost’s first Power Rangers appearance since 1997. When trying to bring Zordon back, Billy accidentally restores Rita Repulsa and has to reassemble the Power Rangers to fight her.
Trini, the original Yellow Ranger, died in combat protecting Billy from Robot Rita's attack. The Blue Ranger spent the following year trying to reconnect with Minh, Trini's daughter, who believed her mother would still be alive if it wasn't for Billy. A new Power Rangers lineup featuring Billy, Zack, Kat, Rocky, and Minh destroyed Robot Rita and freed all the other Rangers she had captured. Despite his failed experiment, Billy noted that he still believed Zordon could still be alive.
Once & Always also marked the return of Walter Emanuel Jones to the franchise 29 years after his last appearance on the show.
The Original Blue Ranger Mentored The Cosmic Fury Rangers
Billy returned in Cosmic Fury
David Yost’s return as Billy alongside Walter Emanuel Jones’ Zack and other Mighty Morphin characters in Once & Always was incredibly exciting. Fortunately, it would take only a few months for Billy to appear again. The original Blue Ranger was a recurrent character in Cosmic Fury, a direct sequel to Dino Fury that celebrated Power Rangers’ 30th anniversary with a nostalgic season. Billy mentored the Cosmic Fury characters for most of the season and was the one who created the Cosmic Fury morphers. The Blue Ranger also ed the action in multiple episodes.
Cosmic Fury’s ending revealed that the Mighty Morphin team, now including Minh as the new Yellow Ranger, continued to work together. Billy was piloting the Dino Megazord during the show’s final battle and helped save the universe from Lord Zedd and his allies one final time. Billy’s last scene in Power Rangers as of 2023 saw him learning that Zordon was alive somewhere in the Morphin Grid, an emotional moment that brought Power Rangers full circle but also left the door open for Billy to return in future stories.
