While Watson season 2 will soon pick up where the first outing left off, but it is not just Morris Chestnut's Dr. John H. Watson who viewers will be eager to see more of.

Mark Kendall’s interview with Screenrant saw the actor make no promises about the pair's future. After Watson’s season 1 finale, the relationship between Stephens and Sasha is a stranger place than ever before. Showrunner Craig Sweeny has already revealed that season 2 will take the finale's confession and expand on it, changing the dynamic between the duo. Per Kendall:

“I thought it was really cool. I haven't been watching the episodes, but from what I hear and what I've read, there's been really cool subtle hints at something brewing between these two, and to have a life-or-death scenario, like we have in the finale, be the catalyst for people to speak their truths to kind of say what they've been feeling. I thought that was a really cool way to tell that story, and especially when one person becomes comatose, maybe it's easier to. Now or never kind of situation… I don't know that I have a personal hope. I think that whatever tells the best story, I think it could go either way, and I think that would be certainly an interesting new dynamic to have a couple among the fellows, and how that would change the group dynamic as we solve cases. But I wonder if there's also a possibility for a delay in that gratification, or maybe it doesn't happen at all. I think that our writers, and showrunner Craig, are just so brilliant at keeping the audience guessing, and keeping us as actors guessing, which can be a real feat.”

Peter Mark Kendall Isn’t Sure If Sasha and Stephens Should End Up Together In Watson Season 2

Stephens' Actor Said The Pair's Plot Could Go Either Way

Watson season 1’s emotional climax saw Sasha’s confession sparked by what seemed like Stephens’ imminent death. Although this forced the characters to confront her buried feelings, Kendall’s comments prove a romantic ending to Stephens and Sasha’s shared story isn’t guaranteed. While Sweeny teased season 2 building on the pair’s new dynamic, Kendall’s comments instead noted that nothing was set in stone. Watson’s links to Sherlock Holmes ensure that the mystery series wants to keep viewers guessing, so it is no surprise that this love story doesn’t have a straightforward conclusion.

When asked if he hoped the characters would end up together, Kendall remained neutral. He acknowledged that a romantic relationship could bring a compelling dynamic shift to the show’s ensemble, but didn’t rule out the possibility of delayed gratification. Kendall even teased the possibility of a story where the romance never materializes. From Moriarty’s finale death to the revelations about Ingrid’s past, Watson season 1 was full of major twists, so season 2 may be slower to dole out satisfying solutions.

Our Take On Sasha and Stephens’ Watson Season 2 Relationship

Watson Season 2 Needs To Offer The Duo A Clear Future Either Way

With both Sweeny and Kendall deliberately playing their cards close to the chest, Watson season 2 now has an emotionally complex relationship between Stephens and Sasha that requires resolution. Whether they become a couple or not, Watson season 2 must choose a clear direction that reflects the emotional weight of their storyline. While Kendall is right to say that the procedural could play with their dynamic in season 2, Watson must eventually commit to either bringing the couple together or letting them go their own ways once the CBS series returns.
