ScreenRant interviews Rochelle Aytes Watson about Mary and Watson's complicated dynamic, her character's decision not to operate, and Ingrid's future in the series after being dismissed.

Ayetes Believes Mary And Watson Will End Up Together

"For the sake of the show, the will they/won't they has to go on for a while."

Mary talking to Watson in Watson season 1, episode 9

ScreenRant: We recently learned that Mary lost her baby when Watson was away. Did the writers tell you about that beforehand?

Rochelle Aytes: Yes. So Craig Sweeny, the writer-showrunner, sat me down before we started filming. He told me that I lost the baby. He told me that Watson had gone away with Sherlock Holmes for six months and left me. So I knew that information going in because it was important for me to know why Mary treated him the way she did, why she wanted to be separated, and why those walls were up for her.

She and Watson have an important conversation where Mary says she's not angry anymore. How do you feel about her healing progress?

Rochelle Aytes: I'm proud of Mary. It was great to see. She held that secret in for a long time. There's resentment there, and it's important to speak about those things and release it. I think that it was just a matter of time before it was going to come out, and it came out, and now she's able to move past it in a way that she probably didn't even realize she would.

She needed to tell him to release this resentment. And now they're able to connect on a different level. Some of her walls have come down, and you see a softer side. You see them and their banter—that was different. Very different before she told him.

Are you hoping they reconcile romantically, or do you want them to keep building this new dynamic?

Rochelle Aytes: Yes and yes. For the sake of the show, the will they/won't they has to go on for a while. So I would love to see them continue to explore this dynamic. Maybe fall backwards. Again, you got to have the drama, but I think, at the end of the day, Watson and Mary will be together.

With Mary being his boss, what are the challenges of drawing that professional line?

Rochelle Aytes: That's a good question. First of all, the pilot episode, you're still trying to figure it out, right? So the writer, the director, they're giving you notes. We redid one of the scenes, actually, after a focus group saw it. We redid the scene because there's a lot of doctor stuff.

We're talking about a patient, so it's just technical. But you have to infuse that with the personal relationship. Who is this person to you? So yes, I'm your boss, but yes, we're married. Yes, I know who you are. I know how you annoy me sometimes. So it's just a fine blend of both worlds together, and you've just got to find moments where you can be playful and then serious.

Gigi's Case Has Stayed With Mary Through Her Entire Career

"She didn't have the authority, the power that she has now."

What was going through Mary's head when she realized who Ingrid was?

Rochelle Aytes: She heard that word, she heard Didi, and then it crossed her mind like, "Oh, wait a minute." Clearly, Mary has been holding this in for a long time. I think that this is one of those cases that she just never got over. And so when she hears that Ingrid is Didi, it's like mind-blowing.

It's like, "Whoa, now this all makes sense." And then she starts to think about how one of the doctors in a previous episode warned her about Ingrid and how she was dangerous and a narcissist or whatever. And I think all of that came to her in that moment, and she was ready for her to just get out the door because she crossed the line.

How do you think that past situation impacted Mary as a doctor?

Rochelle Aytes: I think it has such a great impact on her because we saw a glimpse of who Mary was in the past. She was always smart and strong and one of the best doctors back then, but she didn't have the authority, the power that she has now.

And unfortunately, because of that, she wasn't able to save Gigi and give her the surgery because her livelihood, her job was at stake. And that definitely has lived with her throughout her career. And I think that if it happened now, she would've made different decisions.

Aytes Doesn't Think Mary Regrets Her Decision In Watson Season 1, Episode 9

"She could have lost her job and not be where she is right now."

I was actually going to ask you that because Ingrid, at least, seems to think she should have done it. Does Mary have any regrets?

Rochelle Aytes: Even when I was preparing this in my mind, I asked those questions. Did she regret it? I think that, in life, you make decisions, and even though it was a hard decision, and you have guilt, it was what she needed to do at that time. So I don't know if she regrets it. She could have lost her job and not be where she is right now. So she did what she had to do, but she wasn't happy about it, and it stuck with her.

It was an unfortunate circumstance.

Rochelle Aytes: That's a good way to put it. It was an unfortunate circumstance.

Mary tells Ingrid she needs to leave. What impact is this going to have on Mary, Ingrid, and the show?

Rochelle Aytes: So at the end of the episode, she says, "You have two months." So she's basically fired. She gives her two months because there is a bit of grace that she's giving her. Now, throughout the next few episodes, more pressing issues arise, which kind of overshadow that. And so Mary has some decisions to make in the following episodes to come because of that.

What questions do you still have about Mary that you're hoping the show will answer?

Rochelle Aytes: I'm wondering...was she always fluid? Because what was interesting was that it wasn't really talked about. She mentioned in the first episode, "You don't know who she is." Watson didn't look too surprised. So I wonder if he's known that she went both ways before, and what was that like? Also, I'm curious to know more about her past in of family structure. Does she have any siblings? Who's her mom? Just personal things like that I have questions about.
