Although Watson season 2 introduces even more complicated characters, these two brothers, who share everything from medical careers to love interests, are its true breakout stars.

Speaking to Screenrant, actor Peter Mark Kendall reflected on how dramatic the finale was for the twins. Morris Chestnut's Dr. John H. Watson may have saved Stephens and Adam from Moriarty’s machinations in Watson’s season 1 finale but this doesn’t mean everything is well between the twins. Adam is dating Stephens’ ex, the lawyer Lauren, while Stephens has complex feelings for Sasha. Meanwhile, Ingrid’s betrayal of Stephens led him to drop her from the team, although her actor’s season 2 return has been confirmed.

"I think there's such beautiful writing in that episode, and there's such beautiful writing that really shows their worldview, one being the kind of consistent pessimist, and the other one's always the optimist, and the way that they also kind of reverse their roles in that sense, too. I think that there's such beautiful growth for both characters, and it was really, really fun to have all of the things that I had all season long, in of clothing, in of hairstyle, in of wearing glasses, in of being able to move in a certain way, having that taken away completely and just being stationary. Lying in a bed made me really have to kind of lean on the language and the kind of way that these guys think and speak.”

Peter Mark Kendall Noted How Weird Stephens and Adam’s Love Lives Are

The Twins’ Shared History Lauren Was An Odd Conflict In Watson Season 1

Kendall’s comments highlight the tangled history between the twins as their romantic entanglements grow even more complicated. With Adam now engaged to Stephens’ ex, Lauren, Watson season 2 will be unable to ignore the history between the three characters. Kendall dubbed the situation “Sticky,” seemingly acknowledging that their apparent peace could be temporary. After all, the fact that Lauren dated Adam before Stephens makes for an awkward love triangle, and even surviving a near-death experience isn’t guaranteed to smooth things over between the pair going forward. Per Kendall:

“I mean, what a sticky situation to be in that your twin brother is dating your ex, now engaged to your ex. I think that it was a really sweet moment of character growth for Adam to have a bit of an introspection, and look at the way that he's hurt his brother. Not intentionally, but to have that kind of self-awareness was a really fun thing to play.”

Luckily, Kendall also noted that Watson season 2 could be a turning point for Adam, as he had already started to recognize the hurt he caused his brother. While Moriarty’s Watson season 1 death might have been the more dramatic twist, this internal reckoning could allow for more mature dynamics between the brothers in season 2. The mysteries might be what drives this Sherlock Holmes update, but it is the shifting dynamics between characters that make the series a critical hit.

Watson Season 2’s Potential Stephen and Adam Growth Explained

Their Shared Near-Death Experience Could Result In Character Growth

Fortunately for both brothers, nothing resets an emotional relationship quite like a dramatic near-death experience. Kendall noted that Stephens has “Let [his resentment] go,” suggesting that almost dying from Moriarty’s virus was all he needed to reevaluate his relationship with his brother. As a result, the tension between the duo may dissipate in season 2 even though Stephens and Lauren are now engaged. If this reset lasts, Watson season 2 could see the two brothers finally get along well together.
