Backstory And Origins Of The Cult Mechanicus
A Dedicated Lifestyle For Worshippers Of The Machine God
The Adeptus Mechanicus can trace their origins over 10,000 years before the events of Space Marine 2, allying with the Imperium of Man with the g of the Treaty of Mars. With the g of this treaty, the Mechanicus were given access to the Imperium's resources to search the galaxy for technology, while permitting them to continue worshiping their Machine God.
Normally, the religious practices of the Mechanicus would mark them as an enemy of the secular Imperium, but with the treaty in effect, their religious focus and political autonomy have been granted pardon for the betterment of mankind.
The Mechanicus also worship the Emperor as the ultimate bearer of knowledge, referring to him as the "Omnissiah", which is quoted by Tech-Priests throughout Space Marine 2.
The Treaty of Mars not only greatly benefited both the Imperium and the Mechanicus in the long run, but it also helped avoid a long and costly war between the two powerful factions. While the Adeptus Mechanicus are not traditional fighters, many of them can still hold their own in combat, as seen by the various Tyranid corpses often littered around the fallen Tech-Priests. Mechanicus fighters have augmentations that boost their abilities beyond what's traditionally possible, on top of utilizing floating-skulled servitors to rain fire upon enemies.
The Machanicus' Actions In Space Marine 2 And Their Reasoning
Butting Heads With Titus And His Ultramarines
While the unquenchable thirst for knowledge by the Adeptus Mechanicus can cause great harm if left unchecked, their actions in Space Marine 2 were an attempt at ing the Imperium's war effort. By utilizing the Aurora Device that Nozick and Leuze had spent decades researching, The Adeptus Mechanicus had hoped to use its otherworldly power to defeat the agents of Chaos once and for all. The device itself is not an artifact of Chaos as players were initially made to believe, but a Necron artifact that traces its origins to the tomb-world of Demerium.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Could See The Return Of A Terrifying Villain
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has set up the perfect enemy faction to return, and fans have even spotted it in the main campaign.
While the Mechanicus Tech-Priests had good intentions, their designs were ultimately injected by the beings they were seeking to destroy. Despite constant warnings from Titus, who had experienced the device's power firsthand during the events of the original Space Marine, Aurora was activated to initial success by Leuze within the Necron tombs.
After Leuze was struck down by Malgus, it was revealed that the Chaos God Tzeentch had set the events of the story in motion from the very beginning, aiming to bolster his army's strength with the artifact's ancient power. Living up to his title of the great deceiver, Tzeentch had likely been scheming for centuries in his second attempt at utilizing the artifact's power, with Space Marine 2 leaving it up to players to stop him once more.
