The Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40K’s Orks are known for building overpowered, absurdly dangerous weapons that more often than not hurt them as much as they hurt their targets.

Growing out of a tabletop war game, Warhammer has spawned dozens of video games, ranging from third-person action to turn-based tactics. Battlefleet Gothic: Armada games.

Despite Warhammer’s origins in turn-based tactics, Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron is taking the series in an entirely different direction when it launches in Q4 2020. According to developer Phosphor Games Studio, Dakka Squadron is all about fast-paced aerial combat as players climb the ranks from a rookie Ork Flyboy to become an exalted Warboss. The campaign will comprise more than 20 missions on multiple worlds where players will be able to earn upgrades to build their ultimate flying death machine. Phosphor Games Studio promises that “all of the player actions revolve around fighting,” which should make Dakka Squadron an action-packed dogfighting game with little downtime.

Dakka Squadron will feature five Ork clans for players to choose from, each with its own special abilities. For instance, the Goffs have planes that take less damage from ramming other ships, the Evil Sunz have the fastest planes in the fleet, and the Death Skullz can perform critical hits and occasionally negate damage. The roster is rounded out by the Blood Axes, who can perform special maneuvers more often, and the Bad Moons, who have a higher fire rate.

Based on the trailer, Dakka Squadron’s graphics look pretty unimpressive, but that’s a small price to pay if it lets the developers fill the skies with more planes and more explosions. Warhammer 40,000’s Orks are the most unsubtle creatures imaginable, and if Phosphor Games Studio gets the tone right, Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron looks like it could be a frantic, funny airborne brawl.
