Todd Phillips is one of the most successful comedy movie directors of all time. The filmmaker began his career by directing comedies such as Road Trip, Old School, and Starsky & Hutch, and then helmed 2009's The Hangover, which instantly became a comedy sensation. This led to Phillips making two more Hangover movies, completing the trilogy. After the massive success of the Hangover movies, Phillips had a lot more freedom to take on whatever projects he wanted.

This led to him directing Joker in 2019. Joker was another massive success for Phillips, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. This year, Phillips also directed the much more controversial sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. However, before he directed either of the Joker movies, Phillips directed a dark comedy crime film in 2016, which was his first film after The Hangover Part III.

He claimed that he was quite happy with how the movie turned out, but itted that various moments in the film were made up. Examples of fictional moments in War Dogs are the Triangle of Death scene in Iraq and the scene in which Hill's character fires off a machine gun after being ripped off. Read Packouz's full comments below:

The movie definitely makes it more exciting than it was on a day-to-day basis, but by and large I think it's a very well done movie and I was very happy with how it came out. It ended up being about 70% accurate.

The scene that most people ask me about, whether it was true, is the triangle of death scene. The funny thing about that scene is that it is true, but with a big caveat. It didn't happen to us. It happened to the guy who wrote the War Dogs screenplay, his name is Stephen Chin. We never went to Iraq. There was a beretta deal, which is what the whole triangle of death scene is based on. That part is true, but we actually ended up defaulting on that contract. We never delivered on that contract.

Another scene that was completely fictionalized was the scene where Efraim buys weed and then gets ripped off, and then pulls out a machine gun and fires it in the air and gets his 300 bucks back. That never happened.

Our Take On David Packouz's Comments About The Accuracy Of War Dogs

War Dogs Is An Exciting Dark Comedy Movie

Jonah Hill as Efraim Diveroli in War Dogs

War Dogs was clearly made at a time in Phillips' career when he was trying to transition from traditional comedies to more serious movies, and that is evident in the final product. The crime movie tells a very serious, high-stakes story, but includes a lot of comedy to provide some levity for viewers. War Dogs is a solid movie based on a very fascinating story, so it is interesting to hear Packouz's thoughts about the film.
