WandaVision star Paul Bettany has the perfect response to the show's biggest criticism thus far. Marvel Studios kicked off MCU's Phase 4 after an extended hiatus with their inaugural series for Disney+. Debuting with a special two-episode premiere, WandaVision heavily leans on its sitcom inspiration with nostalgic references to classic sitcoms like I Love Lucy and Bewitched. Amidst all that, however, there are subtle hints of a broader and darker narrative that it's building towards.
Aside from its lead couple, WandaVision also features a stacked ing cast such as Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) — all of whom have factored one way or another in the series thus far. In its very first episode, the Marvel Studios production did not waste any time jumping on its premise and throughout its first two episodes, it committed firmly to it. While reviews for the show generally praise this bold approach and intention to try something new for Marvel Studios after the Infinity Saga, not everyone is a fan. Some naysayers point out that WandaVision may have veered too far away from the typical comic book project fare.
Amidst this, Bettany has only one short piece of advice for those who are finding WandaVision thus far lacking: "PATIENCE." As seen in a screengrab shared on Reddit by with the handle u/Intouch91480, the actor chimed in on a conversation among fans who were discussing their thoughts on the project, particularly the weekly release schedule. Patience from marvelstudios
After around 18 months of no new MCU content, there's obviously clamor for WandaVision and it's understandable that some want to know everything about the show all at once. But the pros to this kind of slow-burn storytelling outweigh the cons, particularly when it comes to these high-profile Disney+ shows. The Mandalorian already proved that this weekly release is more effective in keeping people's attention on the show which is what every TV show or movie wants. It also makes it easier for those who don't have the time to binge a full season to catch up which could bring in more new viewers.
That said, it's only fair to point out that while The Mandalorian took on a more serial approach, particularly on its first season, it's clear that there's a bigger story brewing for WandaVision. This adds to some's frustration on wanting to know everything about the show in one go. It doesn't help that the first two episodes were very different from what people are used to from the MCU. At this point in their history, Marvel Studios needs to be bolder in taking storytelling risks rather than stick to their formulaic ways to be sustainable for the next decade; taking such a big swing to open Phase 4 is an indication of that.
