Walton Goggins has already had a successful career for several decades, but his recent streak of TV shows has made him more popular than ever, and career-best performances for Walton Goggins, and Fallout certainly numbers among that list as well. Inspired by the game series of the same name, Fallout season 1 centered on Lucy's attempts to track her father across a post-apocalyptic United States, meeting with the Ghoul and Maximus along the way. Though the series received rave reviews upon release, Goggins expressed concern about one big thing while filming the role.
Walton Goggins Was Freaked Out While Putting On The Ghoul's Prosthetics For Fallout
The Actor Was Worried About The Difficulties Of Acting With Prosthetics In High Heat
Though the reviews for Fallout season 1, and Goggins' performance specifically, were very positive, the actor shared that there were moments when he was worried about his ability to perform the role of the Ghoul. While his scenes as Cooper Howard likely had their own challenges thanks to the character's conflicted emotions about Vault-Tec and his role in the company, his scenes as the Ghoul were far more physically demanding. Leading into Fallout's season 1 premiere, Goggins shared in an interview with The Guardian that he was "freaking out" about the prosthetics.

Walton Goggins' Missing The Righteous Gemstones Ending Reunion Is Finally Happening In His Returning 94% RT Action Show
Baby Billy's The Righteous Gemstones ending was missing a season 2 character, but Walton Goggins will still reunite with that actor in another show.
In a candid reflection on his time filming Fallout season 1, Goggins also told The Guardian "I sat down on a log and literally said to myself: 'Man you're getting too old for this s**t. I don't know how I'm going to do nine months of this'," after filming in the 100-degree heat for hours in his prosthetics. This filming scenario sounds undeniably difficult, but the Ghoul's prosthetic appearance and Goggins' performance were great. As with his other roles, it is clear that Goggins was completely devoted to becoming the character, in spite of the physical challenges.
Fallout Could Have Gone Wrong In A Lot Of Ways (But It Worked)
The Series Was A Hit Both With Fans Of The Game & New Audiences
There is always a big question mark placed on video game adaptations in the lead-up to their premiere because it seems there is so much that could go wrong. Though there is a degree of uncertainty with any movie or TV show before its release, video game adaptations are particularly tricky as fans have an established idea of what the project should look like, but, simultaneously, the creators do not want to make it too niche and alienate new audiences. Luckily, Fallout was able to perfectly balance both its inspiration and its own originality.
The world-building of the games' universe within the series is phenomenal, and the show looks great overall.
Fallout worked so well both with fans of the game and with people new to the Fallout universe because of its new take on the franchise. The series tells its own unique story, but there are many elements and characters throughout the show that are crucial to the games. The world-building of the games' universe within the series is phenomenal, and the show looks great overall. In addition to the impressively integrated game aspects, the series also benefits from great direction, production design, and performances.
Walton Goggins As The Ghoul Is One Of The Best Things About Fallout
Goggins' Performance Has Received A Lot Of Praise
On the whole, all the performances in Fallout are very good, but Goggins as the Ghoul was a particular stand-out in season 1. By the actor's own ission, the character was difficult to perform because of the added stress of the facial prosthetics, but the Ghoul has a lot of emotional depth as well. Throughout the season, audiences get to know Cooper Howard and the Ghoul and the events that turned one into the other over the course of 200 years.
When the Ghoul is introduced, he is quite ruthless but becomes increasingly complex as the series continues and both the Ghoul and Cooper are explored further. Though each of the main characters go on journeys throughout Fallout season 1, Goggins' character is by far the most complex because of the divide between who he was before the war and what he became after. Audiences are slowly clued in to what brought the Ghoul onto Lucy's path and why he made those big past decisions, allowing Fallout to create empathy for a seemingly villainous character.
