A new The Walking Dead game has been announced called The Walking Dead: Destinies. The title will be published by GameMill Entertainment, which has a history of handling major IPs and brands such as Nickelodeon, Cobra Kai, G.I. Joe, American Ninja Warrior, and more, and is set to focus on several fan-favorite characters from the Walking Dead universe.

As revealed by IGN, The Walking Dead: Destinies will include over a dozen characters from the popular zombie franchise, including Rick, Shane, Michonne, Carol, Daryl, and more, each with their own unique skillset. Check out IGN's announcement trailer below.

The game will be a third-person action-adventure where players must manage resources, and gather a variety of weapons to fend off hordes of "walkers".

TWD: Destinies Will Not Follow The Comics' Timeline

The Walking Dead franchise is no stranger to the video game medium with varying success. While there have been acclaimed titles such as Telltale's The Walking Dead series and experimental ones like The Walking Dead: Last Mile, these predominantly explored the comic timeline, and titles such as The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners opted not to follow any particular timeline while incorporating the tone of the comics and TV show. The Walking Dead: Destinies' story will take a different approach, and will take place within the AMC TV series' continuity, particularly between seasons 1 to 4. Its closeness with the show could well make it the TWD game fans have been waiting for.

Despite the AMC show's longevity, running from 2010 to 2022 and spawning several spin-offs, this continuity had only previously appeared in 2013's The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Unfortunately, despite following a hugely popular original character from the show, Daryl Dixon, Survival Instinct didn't fare well with critics for its clunky gameplay and overall lack of polish, so hopefully, GameMill Entertainment's attempt to revisit this timeline will fare better.

Players Will Be Able To Change The Events Of AMC's The Walking Dead

The decision to set The Walking Dead: Destinies within the AMC continuity, and its narrative's placement on that timeline should offer come as good news to fans of the show. As Destinies follows the first four seasons, it does mean that players won't interact with major characters from later in the series such as Negan, but they will see some of the franchise's major landmarks such as Hershel's Farm and the West Georgia Correctional Facility, and will deal with the threat of one of the series' most menacing villains, The Governor. A unique prospect for such a tie-in, however, is allowing players the opportunity to control the characters' history and alter the original story of the TV series, ensuring that nobody is safe and adding a new level of tension to the game.

A release date for The Walking Dead: Destinies has yet to be confirmed. According to GameMill's announcement, however, it is due to release on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, at a price of $49.99.
