Uncharted 2 gets a promidate, raising hopes of a sequel to the 2022 Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg action-adventure movie. Based on the popular line of video games, Uncharted followed the exploits of globetrotting adventurer Nathan Drake (Holland) and his grizzled mentor Sully (Wahlberg) as they seek the lost treasure of Magellan. Fans of the original games thought Holland was miscast as Drake, but nevertheless, the film went on to gross a healthy $407 million at the worldwide box office, seemingly paving the way for a sequel to happen.

Those thirsting for more of Holland and Wahlberg’s treasure-hunting exploits have indeed received a bit of good news, as producer Charles Roven indicates that there is interest at Sony in exploring an Uncharted sequel. Check out what Roven had to say in the space below (via THR):

Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.

What Uncharted 2 Could Be About

The ending somewhat optimistically includes a pair of scenes that set up a potential sequel. After the movie’s big action climax in which the sought-after Magellan treasure is lost, it’s revealed that Nathan Drake’s supposedly dead brother Sam is actually alive and in prison somewhere. As further sequel bait, a mid-credits scene introduces a villain named Gage (Pilou Asbæk), an associate of a major game antagonist named Gabriel Roman.

These clues point directly toward what Uncharted 2 could be about: Nate’s quest to find his brother Sam, and a treasure hunt that turns into a race against Roman. The treasure sought by Nate and Sully (and Roman) would likely be the fabled lost city of El Dorado, following after the plot of the original Uncharted game, in which Roman was the main villain.

It remains to be seen whether Uncharted 2 actually charts a course toward movie screens in the coming months, but the games have plenty of unexplored storylines to draw from. The action-adventure genre unfortunately doesn’t seem a huge draw at present, after the underwhelming performance of this summer’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Perhaps Uncharted 2 could establish a new treasure hunting action franchise, with Holland’s Drake becoming a new generation's version of Indiana Jones.
