Twisters Cast & Character Guide
The 1996 disaster movie Twister featured some famous names, but the sequel is ready to rival it with an impressive ensemble cast.
Screen Rant interviewed stars Sasha Lane and Brandon Perea about the new disaster movie Twisters. They shared insight into their storm chaser characters and what they learned from the real-life meteorologists and storm chasers in "weather boot camp." Lane praised Chung's directing style and Perea revealed his own experiences with severe weather while filming.
Sasha Lane & Brandon Perea Break Down Their Storm Chaser Characters In Twisters
Lane explained what her character's role is in the team of storm chasers, describing Lily as the eyes, but not the ears of the operation. Perea revealed that Boone, as Tyler's right-hand man, is responsible for both keeping the audience engaged and when on the road chasing storms.
Sasha Lane: Lily, she basically, essentially is the eyes and ears, I guess not necessarily ears, with the drone. Just being able to help gather information and she's just happy to be there.
Brandon Perea: Boone's crazy man wants to be in the eye of the storm, Tyler's right hand man. I'm there to capture all the footage and keep the crowd and the audience hyped. So we keep watching, getting more subscribers and also there to help and protect towns when having a good time while doing it.
You guys went through a weather boot camp with Kevin Kelleher and he also worked as an advisor on the original Twister 30 years ago. What did you guys learn from him about tornadoes?
Sasha Lane: I guess it just dived in deeper from what I already kind of knew as well as the lingo. But I guess the coolest thing to me and the most bizarre thing, and I'm so in awe with nature, is that still no matter what with all this technology, everything that we've learned, everything that's been done over time, you just will never fully be able to know when or how or where. You'll have as much info as you can, but tornadoes really have a mind of their own. It's bizzare.
Brandon Perea: Learning about the commitment to their craft is so inspiring and it just made me more grateful as a human on this planet that there's people out there willing to learn more and to put themselves in danger in order to help us, to keep us safe and protected from these crazy weather scenarios. I just love their excitement to their craft.
They work 24 hours a day to check the weather, to make sure that everyone's all good and to send out warnings and they thrive off of shaving every second that they can alert people sooner. They just made it fun to learn too, because they just love what they do. I don't know if you'd ever expect that in a sense where they work in an office meteorology stuff, but their eyes are lighting up.
Sasha Lane: Their eyes are bright the whole time. They really, really care about it. It's amazing.
Brandon Perea: They're great teachers. They just help you understand it without putting too much jargon. They'll say the jargon but then guide you to what it actually means.
Sasha Lane Talks Lee Isaac Chung Collaborative Directing Style
Lane also praised Chung's directing style, especially in how it made her feel comfortable while fully leaning into her character. She explained how her natural twang would come out, but Chung told her that she didn't need to suppress it because it helped show the excitement felt by Lily.
Sasha Lane: It was just a lot of free range and the best thing was probably like, don't worry about capping your accent. I get a little twang sometimes I get a little overly excited and he's like, Just go with it. I think that helped me be like, Lily, she's kind of like what we were just talking about. I know why I'm there. I'm ionate one, about the storms, but also about helping people. It just made it have a more relaxed feel.
Do you guys have any personal experiences working in Oklahoma around that time during tornado season?
Brandon Perea: Yeah, there's just a point where I was in my trailer one day and we got shut down due to lightning delay. And then I was looking on my own cell phone radar because the storm was kind of going crazy and I felt my trailer just shaking. I was just thinking like, Damn, are we in the tornado right now? I was texting everybody else like, Yo, it feels like I'm about to flip over it. What is going on? I'm playing Spider-Man right now on my laptop. I can't deal with the tornado right now.
Yeah, that was one moment. And then there's times where I had a little rental car and I would be driving around by myself a lot. Whenever there was rain and clouds coming, I was like, Hold up. I don't know what to do in this situation properly, and I'm by myself. Is production going to be pissed off at me? So those were the moments that I had in Oklahoma. Wow. You never know. We're in tornado season, so you don't know what's going to happen.
