This list is a discussion of toxic behavior in relationships, with mentions of suicidal ideation and sexual assault.

the Cullens all enrolled in high school to keep their true nature a secret. Soon, Bella falls in love with one of them, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

Bella also reunites with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), whom she knew as a child, and there are immediately sparks between them. This leads to the franchise's main love triangle, but those aren't the only relationships in Twilight. Other vampires are coupled up, the shape-shifter pack Jacob belongs to has some very problematic relationships, and the friendships are not much better in many cases. It always comes down to the possessive nature of the couples and how they can't seem to accept another person's decisions.

10 Edward Gaslights Bella At The Start Of Their Relationship

Edward Tries To Make Bella Feel Like She Is Crazy

It doesn't take long for Bella Swan to realize there is something different about Edward Cullen. They don't hit it off when they are in class together because her scent overwhelms Edward. Add in the fact that he can't hear her thoughts, and things are even harder for the vampire. After Edward saves Bella's life from an accident in the parking lot, Bella deduces he must be supernatural and confronts him about it. Edward's reaction should have sent Bella running in the opposite direction.

Twilight: Why Bella & Edward's Relationship Is So Toxic

One of the most criticized elements in Twilight is the relationship between Bella and Edward, which is very toxic – and here's why.

He starts by treating her like she is crazy and commenting that she must have been seeing things. When Bella presses Edward, he completely gaslights her. Once he finally its his true nature to her, he completely goes off the rails and lets her know he can kill her and emphasizes he has killed people before. He throws around giant tree branches and tries to intimidate her, but for some reason, Bella won't let it go, and Edward's gaslighting makes her even more interested in him.

9 Edward Sneaking Into Bella's Room To "Watch Her Sleep"

Edward Was Stalking Bella From The Start

Bella and Edward in bed in Twilight Eclipse.

In the first Twilight movie, Bella is sleeping, and when she wakes up, she thinks she has seen someone standing in the corner of her room watching her. She looks back, and the figure is gone. However, she learns later that this wasn't her imagination. Edward sneaks into her window one night and makes small talk before dropping a bomb on Bella. He tells her he has been sneaking into her bedroom for a while to "watch her sleep."

Edward had his reasons: he was trying to get used to her scent.

Edward says it innocently, itting that watching her sleep is "fascinating to him." Bella has a quick look of concern, but that goes away pretty quickly. However, this doesn't discount the fact that a 104-year-old vampire was sneaking into the bedroom of a teenage girl to watch her sleep, which is a crime in most states. It is also the home of the Chief of Police, so this could have gotten bad. It is still a stalker-like action, even if Edward had his reasons: he was trying to protect her and get used to her scent to make it safer to be around her.

8 Bella Tells Edward, "You Can't Leave Me"

Bella Swan Tells Edward They Have To Be Together

Thanks to Bella getting to know Edward and his family better, she feels like she has found her soul mate. This is all thrown into disarray when a separate vampire coven encounters them, and one of the other vampires, James, decides to hunt down Bella as his next target. Bella almost dies, and Edward barely saves her. Later, while Bella is in the hospital recovering, Edward tells her he will leave town to keep her safe.

Edward feels that being around him endangers Bella, which it does more than once in the franchise. However, her reaction is overwhelming and one of the most cringe moments in the Twilight franchise. She yells out that he could "never" leave her and to never say anything like that again. It is hugely demanding and possessive, and Edward ends up going away in the next film, possibly thanks to Bella's reaction.

7 The Cullens' Treatment Of Rosalie

The Cullens Ignored Rosalie's Concerns - And She Was Right

Nikki Reed's Rosalie stands in the Cullen house in The Twilight Saga

The Cullens are mostly a cohesive and loving family. However, they treat Rosalie poorly at the start, and it almost seems like they care little for her feelings about their safety. Rosalie knows, above all the others, that Bella is dangerous to have around. Bella puts their entire family at risk. Edward gaslights Rosalie, saying this is just how she is and that Bella should ignore her.

Later, when James starts hunting Bella, Rosalie asks why they should put their lives in danger for her. Carlisle says that Bella is part of their family now despite only knowing her for a short time, and he sends Rosalie out to be bait for James. Even after Edward dismisses Rosalie's concerns, she was right all along, and Bella almost gets the entire family killed — and yet, she is treated like an overreacting female the whole time.

6 Bella Tries To Hurt Herself After Edward's Departure

Bella's Dangerous Actions Almost Result In Edward's Death

Taylor Lautner as Jacob saves Kristen Stewart as Bella in Twilight New Moon

Edward hurt Bella when he left in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Even after demanding that he never leave her, the vampire knew that he had to get away from the teenage girl before he put her in danger again. Little did he know that Bella was unwilling to let him go that easily, and she was serious when demanding that he give himself to her forever. She reacts by trying to hurt herself, possibly knowing it would hurt Edward if she did.

In New Moon, she takes on risky hobbies, including riding motorcycles at dangerous speeds and cliff diving. In the books, Bella says she feels suicidal at times, and while the movies don't say this, they hint at it. When she cliff-dives and Victoria almost kills her, Alice sees a vision of Bella dying and Edward finds out. Thus, Bella's selfish actions nearly indirectly cause Edward to die by suicide to the Volturi, with his own dependent behavior also being to blame.

5 Jacob Forces Himself Onto Bella

Jacob Wouldn't Take No For An Answer

From the first Twilight installment, Bella makes it clear that she only has eyes for Edward. Jacob likes her and wants to have a different relationship with her, but she establishes more than once that she is not interested. In New Moon, Edward leaves for Bella's safety, and she begins to get to know Jacob better. Even with this new twist, she is still leaning toward Edward, which Jacob refuses to accept.

Twilight: 10 Times Bella & Jacob Made Fans Cringe

The relationship between Jacob and Bella in Twilight is, at times, controversial. While shown as romantic, there are quite a few cringe-worthy scenes.

After Bella tells Jacob in that movie that she will always choose Edward, Jacob assaults Bella, forcing a kiss on her to prove that there is something there. This is even worse since Jacob has his werewolf strength and forces Bella to kiss him back against her will. The more that Bella falls for Edward, the more Jacob makes unwanted advances and becomes despicable. Throughout the franchise, Jacob treats Bella like property and won't accept her decision.

4 Bella Tries To Force Edward To Turn Her Against

Bella Demands That Edward End Her Life

Robert Pattinson as Edward and Kristen Stewart as Bella dancing in Twilight

At the end of the first Twilight movie, Edward takes Swan to prom against her better judgment. While there, the two go outside and dance in private, and Bella tells Edward that she wants him to end her life and turn her into a vampire. The two have only dated for a very short time to this point, and Bella is still 17. However, she demands this change from Edward, who declines the request.

This gets worse when Bella believes that she will get her way and Edward will turn her whether he wants to or not. The problem is that Edward explains to Bella that it causes him great emotional and physical pain to change someone, and she doesn't care. Despite him wanting to be with her the way she is, she demands to be a vampire herself for him and won't accept his decision not to turn her, almost forcing him to go against his own free will.

3 Edward Isolates Bella From Her Loved Ones

Edward Becomes Overly Possessive Of Bella

Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

When Edward finally relents and starts dating Bella, things grow dark from the start. On top of gaslighting her and making veiled threats about how dangerous he is, Edward also becomes extremely possessive of Bella. The first moment that really shows this is when he stalks and follows her to Portland to save her, which the narrative justifies when he saves her from a group that would have raped her. Edward then pulls Bella away from her two friends and says he will take care of her.

Edward isolates her from her father, friends, and especially Jacob.

When Edward began sneaking into her room to "keep her safe," he took it to another level. The following installments are only worse. Edward isolates her from her father, friends, and especially Jacob. He takes her away from everyone, and he takes complete control of her life. While Bella eventually accepts this, Edward's possessive nature should have been a red flag from the start, as he conditioned and indoctrinated her to only feel safe if under his thumb.

2 The Snowy Mountain Scene With Edward, Bella, & Jacob

All Three Lead Characters Use Toxic Manipulation In This Scene

Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan kisses Tayler Lautner in the snow in Twilight Eclipse

So many bad things happen in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse during the mountain scene. What makes it so bad is that all three leads make toxic and manipulative moves, and none of them come away looking good. Jacob is the worst. When Bella is freezing to death in the tent, he reveals he is the only warm-blooded one who can keep her safe and taunts Edward with this fact. Once again, Jacob treats Bella like property for which he and Edward compete.

Jacob Black was one of Bella's love interests in the Twilight series. But even though he was a main character, he did some bad things.

Edward acts overly possessively, fitting his entire personality throughout the franchise. Bella leads both men on throughout this movie, making them hate each other even more. When Jacob learns Bella and Edward are getting married, he tells Bella he will just die in the battle to protect her, which is the most manipulative thing he could say. When Bella kisses him to convince him otherwise, she takes the toxicity to another level.

1 Jacob Imprints On Renesmee As A Baby

Jacob & Bella's Daughter Connect After The Baby's Birth

Jacob Black and Renesmee Cullen in Twilight Breaking Dawn

When Jacob finally accepts that Bella wants nothing to do with dating him, he backs off slightly. However, he loses control when he learns she wants to have a baby, knowing that could kill her, and hurts Bella when he lashes out at her for her decision. By this time, Jacob's possessive nature is almost worse than Edward's, because Jacob also acts like Bella has no right to make decisions about her life.

When Jacob's pack decides that Bella's daughter, Renesmee, presents a danger and sets out to kill her, Jacob tries to protect her and then imprints on the baby. This means that the two are now connected, and Renesmee is Jacob's future soulmate — even though she is a baby. While this is involuntary for Jacob, it is still a deeply toxic element in The Twilight Saga franchise and a moment that never should have made it into the movie adaptation — or really been written at all.
