Jared Leto is starting the training process and getting ripped for Tron: Legacy was more of a financial success than a critical one, fans have waited for the third installment in the franchise ever since. Initial plans went into development just ahead of Tron: Legacy's release, but they fell apart a few years later.
Leto then became attached to the Tron franchise in 2017, but as updates were slow to come after that, fans doubted whether the third film would ever happen. Renewed rumblings about a new Tron began earlier this year, culminating in the August announcement that Tron 3 is officially moving ahead with Leto and director Garth Davis. Details about the project have been scarce so far, and as of right now, it still doesn't have a release date. However, this new update from Leto could suggest production is closer than it seems.
Leto recently took to social media to share a pre-workout picture. He captioned it, "Starting the Tron workout," thus confirming that he's prepping for the film. This also indicates his role might be pretty action-heavy, with his arms telling a whole story all on their own. You can see his post down below.
Training for a film can take months, so this doesn't necessarily confirm Tron 3 will start production any time soon. However, it does suggest that Disney has a timeline in place for the film. Tron 3 could perhaps begin filming next year, which would clear it for a 2022 release at the earliest. Disney has a few open dates in 2022 that could be filled by Tron 3, though if it gets pushed back at all, it could also be slotted in for 2023.
Leto seemingly revealed Tron 3's title will be Tron: Ares not long after the initial announcement was made, and so far that's just about all fans know about this new installment. When he first ed the franchise, it was rumored Leto's character would be named Ares, and that appears to be holding firm. This means he'll be playing an entirely new character for the franchise, and it remains to be seen if previous Tron stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde will return for this movie. However, if Leto is already prepping for it, more information might be released soon.
