Jared Leto's Tron: Legacya sequel that saw Bridges return to the franchise while introducing new characters played by Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Legacy was a financial success, but Disney has been slow to come up with a follow-up plan.

There were plans to make Tron 3, but Disney scrapped those in 2015 just ahead of production beginning. In 2017, seemed optimistic that Tron 3 could happen. Now it turns out he was right, though he won't be involved in the project.

Deadline reports Disney is slowly moving forward with Tron 3, with Garth Davis now attached to direct. This would finally be Leto's long in-development film, and he will also produce alongside Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook. Additionally, the most recent draft of the script has been written by Jesse Wigutow. However, it has been noted that the project is still technically in the development stages and has not been given an official green light.

Reports had surfaced in July that Tron 3 had officially been put back into development, but this is the first official step Disney has taken. While Tron 3 isn't completely a go just yet, it is promising that Disney has tapped a director. Davis is best known for his lower-budget work, like the Oscar-nominated Lion. This will mark his first blockbuster project, which makes him an interesting choice for Tron 3. However, Disney has found great success in recent years with picking directors better known for their smaller-budget films, so this could prove an excellent decision.

It remains to be seen whether the stars of Legacy will be invited back for Tron 3, or if Leto will still play the character Ares. Right now, everything is in the very early stages, so fans shouldn't expect to actually see Tron 3 any time soon. Disney is likely evaluating the story and Davis' approach before giving it an official greenlight, though the coronavirus pandemic could also impact any progress within the next few months. Nevertheless, fans will likely be thrilled with this news, as it's the first sign of real forward movement to arrive in years. After the news that Disney scrapped plans for a Tron Disney+ series, this has to be a major positive.
