Top Gun: Maverick recently made its premiere at the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival. Cannes is a notoriously difficult avenue for a new film to test its merit, with audiences traditionally not shy about booing or praising the films that screen. In the case of Maverick, however, its cast and crew couldn’t have asked for a better reaction. As per Variety, the sequel’s screening reportedly ended on a high note, with the audience at the esteemed Palais des Festivals rewarding it with a 5-minute standing ovation.
Many films over the years have received a similar reaction only to later find that general audiences didn’t feel the same way. But while a 5-minute standing ovation isn’t a guarantee that Kosinski’s sequel will go on to follow in the original film’s blockbuster footsteps, it certainly does add a significant amount of momentum to the sequel. With Cruise having built up his daredevil status since Top Gun’s 1986 release, a new era of fans will likely make the trip to theaters in order to see what so far looks like some pretty heart-pounding action sequences. In addition to that, fans of the original film are also probably ready to jump back into the intense world of Top Gun.
Unfortunately, Top Gun: Maverick wasn’t selected to officially compete for the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or. This might disappoint some, however, as respected as the award is, Maverick likely has its sights set on dominating box offices – a task that hasn’t been especially easy ever since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Maverick is already no stranger to the pandemic’s ways, with its release having previously been delayed as a result. But as acclaim grows for the film, it looks like this sequel very well could be the summer’s first blockbuster hit.
