Time Cut Stars Break Down Their Characters’ Bond Amidst The Movie’s Violence

“There's slashing and futuring, but it's a beautiful sisterhood.”

Madison Bailey & Antonia Gentry doing a makeover in Time Cut

Screen Rant: Time Cut is so much fun. I feel like these are the types of movies that I watched growing up. Madison, Lucy's such a complex character who's dealing with grief and the pressure of altering time. Can you talk to me about the character a little bit more?

Madison Bailey: Lucy's somebody who's very "Poor me. My life life sucks." She's down on the world, and I think she feels in a way that she's the only one going through a lot of her problems. And I think once she finally meets Summer, her idea of perfection, she's seeing these flaws and this loneliness. The most popular person in the world can be lonely. You said, "Your words, not mine."

Screen Rant: Let's talk about Summer for a second, without giving any spoilers away. Can you talk to me about how Summer plays a part in Lucy's journey?

Antonia Gentry: I think these are two sides of the same coin. They come from two completely different worlds but are experiencing such similar feelings of loneliness. When they do cross paths, you can really see their sisterhood open up, and it becomes easier for them to truly break down the judgments and get to the core of who they are in a way that I don't think they've had the opportunity to [do] outside of meeting each other.

It's beautiful. And then, you know, there's slashing and futuring, but it's a beautiful sisterhood.

Madison Bailey: Minor details!

Putting On 2000s Accessories For Time Cut Took Antonia Gentry 7-And-A-Half Minutes

“There's something about having the character together, and then seeing the character visually.”

Antonia Gentry & Griffin Gluck looking confused in Time Cut

Screen Rant: This movie takes place in the early 2000s. I feel like that was such a unique cultural time and aesthetic, with the fashion especially. How did you guys immerse yourselves in that era for Time Cut.

Antonia Gentry: It was the clothes, man.

Madison Bailey: I know, it's the outfits! You have to give so much credit to the wardrobe department because you can be this character in your head, but when you're in your own clothes, something's still off. And there's something about having the character together, and then seeing the character visually.

Antonia Gentry: I think I timed myself in the morning putting on all of my accessories. I had the clothes on, but I timed because they kept getting onto me like, "Hurry up, we need to go." I'm like, "I'm still putting on bracelets!"

It took me seven-and-a-half minutes for one of the outfits to put on all of the belts, all of the bracelets, all of the necklaces, the earrings, and the little hair dongle thing.

Screen Rant: Maherson did such a great job of blending the horror and the time travel element while making this a psychological thriller all at the same time. Can you talk to me about what Hannah's directing style added to the film?

Madison Bailey: Yeah, I think there's a part of it where the horror on the page makes sense, and you kind of know what you're going into. I think Hannah did a great job at keeping everything grounded in the heart of the story and reminding us of the heart of this. I think she really cared about that and really took the time, [whereas] it could have been focused on so many other things. For her to take the time in the slow moments was really, really crucial.

Antonia Gentry & Madison Bailey Rediscovered Malls Thanks To Time Cut

“What were we doing? Going nowhere fast.”

Screen Rant: You guys have incredible chemistry on camera together. Can you talk about building that chemistry?

Madison Bailey: Well, when you're alone in Canada... When you're in Winnipeg.

Antonia Gentry: We were in Winnipeg, in the middle of COVID lockdown. We played Mario Kart and had wine and painting nights.

Madison Bailey: We found our joy. For me, it was the mall and bowling.

Antonia Gentry: Oh, my God. We went to the mall! Just like in the movie.

Madison Bailey: Just like 2003, we went to the mall. For no reason. It was just like, "Hey..." What were we doing? Going nowhere fast.

Screen Rant: What did you guys want to bring to Lucy and Summer that went beyond the page?

Antonia Gentry: I think we've been talking about how our characters are refreshingly smart and resilient, compared to a lot of what you see for female characters in horror films.

For Summer, it was nice to break down that sort of surface level, "she's like this perfect popular girl from 2003," and really get to the meat of who she is. When the time really comes, she can step up to the plate. So, that was nice. That was cool.
