Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Ultimates #11! the Ultimate Universe. And, to do that, Thor must utilize a new superpower, which is the last one fans would expect.

In The Ultimates #11 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, Thor and Sif travel to Asgard to free it from Loki’s rule. When the Maker came to Earth-6160 to reshape it to his liking, he helped Loki become king, earning the cooperation of Asgard as the Maker continued bending the rest of the universe to his will. Thor and Sif have gone to Asgard to dethrone Loki before the Maker is released from his temporal prison (a race against time that’s been the main focus of The Ultimates series).

But, how can just two Asgardians take on an entire kingdom? Loki is the Allfather, therefore everyone is duty-bound to follow his orders. Even Sif was once Loki’s soldier, keeping Thor in prison after he was deemed a traitor by the God of Mischief. Well, Thor and Sif used a brand-new ability to both infiltrate Asgard and recruit those who were willing to defy their king: an invisibility cloak.

Thor has the Power to Turn Invisible, the Last Power Fans Would Expect

Thor Announces His Presence with Thunder & Lightning, He Doesn’t Hide and Sneak

Marvel Comics' Thor surging with lightning power.

Thor using the power of invisibility is definitely not something long-time Thor fans would expect, given the usual way he presents himself in battle. When Thor challenges his opponent, he arrives at the scene with a wave of thunder and lightning, booming the entire location to the point where no one has any mistake in their mind about who he is and why he’s there. The last thing anyone would expect Thor to do is sneak around as an invisible spy, reduced to hiding in the very halls he is supposed to rule.

Then again, this says more about Thor’s situation than it does his character. It’s not like Thor had a choice in the matter. If he ran into Asgard with his proverbial guns blazing, he would have been killed or imprisoned. He needed to covertly check out the situation and use smart tactics to gather intel before declaring war. Sure, Thor would never choose to sneak around and hide, but in this reality, he literally has no choice, and doing so is the smartest option.

Thor Could Easily Get Invisibility Powers in the MCU

The Dwarves of Nidavellir Made the Invisibility Cloak

Marvel Comics' Thor with MCU Thor next to him.

While he might not even be interested, it’s possible that the version of Thor in the MCU could also have this invisibility cloak. How? Well, the invisibility cloak in the Ultimate Universe was created by the Dwarves of Nidavellir, and that’s not something new for fans of the MCU, as they’ve already been to Nidavellir in Avengers: Infinity War and met Eitri. Since the Avengers defeated Thanos, it’s fair to assume that Eitri would be happy to make Thor anything he could ever want, including this invisibility cloak.

Indeed, the invisibility cloak is strong enough to hide from gods, so it would be a powerful tool to have in the MCU just as it is in the Ultimate Universe. That said, it’s certainly not a power fans would expect to see someone like Thor use, even if he literally had no choice.
